It should be noted that Hemingway was at times neither a gentleman, a good father, nor a proper example of manhood, and no effort will be made here to rewrite history. Yet for all his flaws, he represents an enigma of masculinity that so easily captures the imagination. His life was filled with the grand adventures that fill the dreams of many young boys and grown men alike. Ernest Hemingway was born July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. He grew up to love hunting, camping, fishing, and journalism. He joined World War One, the Spanish Civil War, and World War Two. In addition, he traveled to many places and he was a part of the movement known as “The Lost Generation”. His view on life is evident in his books and short stories. Ernest Hemingway’s themes in his novel and short stories are about love, war, wilderness, and lost—which all portray the literature movement at the time.
Ernest Hemingway was influenced by his father who taught him how to fish, hunt, and love nature/wilderness. In addition, he did not like his mother and his distrust and dislike for women show up in his works. The wars he was in shaped him because he saw many people die and he was injured himself in World War One. He worked for various newspapers after World War One, moved to Paris and started working with Gertrude Stein, and had many affairs. He did not like the life of a journalist, so he decided to be a writer. In that respect, his writing resembles the journalist style. As a journalist, he had to omit adjectives and get right to the point of the event. In his stories, he leaves adjectives out and just reports the events, so the real meaning shines through without the “Victorian style” adjectives to make it sound better than it actually is.
