SWOT analysis is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. It is used in order to think about everything that could potentially affect the success of a business or product. Once the analysis has been completed, the goal is to turn weaknesses and threats into strengths and opportunities. The key strength of ErgoClean and the ergonomic dental instrument is that the product offers a unique feature – that it was specifically designed with ergonomics in mind. The product also applies to all dental hygienists, regardless of stage of life. A few weaknesses of ErgoClean stem from it being a new startup company. As a startup, there is less experience within the organization than exists within the more established companies in the dental industry, primarily in the designing and production of the working end of the scaling instruments produced by ErgoClean. Challenges here are to produce an ergonomic handle for the scaling instruments that do not compromise the working end’s durability, strength, and ability to stay sharp. Additionally, as a new company, taking market share away from the competition whose customers have brand loyalty may be a difficult task. Many of the competitors also offer a full line of products, such as instrument cleaning materials, making them a “one stop shop”. Customers will need to be persuaded to use a separate company for scaling instruments. While a strength is that the dental instrument can appeal to all hygienists regardless of time in profession, it may also be difficult to market to younger hygienists who are not yet experiencing any hand pain from the use of manual dental …show more content…

Many dental industry specific publications exist in print and online which offer an opportunity for advertisements and potentially articles focused on the product. The internet also offers the ability for easy sales across the country without requiring the printing and distribution of catalogs. Social media offers both an opportunity and a threat to ErgoClean. Companies place a heavy focus on marketing through social media and customers have begun to expect to be able to communicate and receive quick feedback through these channels. As a strength, social media offers the opportunity to find customers who want to be early adaptors that can spread the word of a good product and influence others. Social media also poses a threat since any negative feedback can be very public. The threats social media pose can often be turned into a strength by mitigating these situations with good response and great customer service. Another threat to the ergonomic dental instrument are that dental instruments are replaced infrequently, so customers will need to be aware of the instrument when it comes times to replace them since it is unlikely current instruments will be replaced just to try something new. A threat to ErgoClean’s bottom line is that the price of the instrument will be effected by any changes in raw material costs which can threaten competitive pricing.
