Poverty currently affects over half of the world population. It does not only have physical and mental effects on the body. It is “the state of having little to no money and few to no material possessions” (Canada Space Dictionary, 2014). There are several internal and external elements that are endorsed by personal, national and the global community to help eradicate poverty in the Third World. Some examples include our individual charitable donations, celebrity endorsements, government organizations, the World Bank, and the United Nations 80,000 Hours; ONE; Patterson & CRC Staff, 2012; United Nations; World Bank, 2013. D., & Bloem, M. W. (2008). The book Nutrition and health in developing countries (2nd edition) describes how Third World countries populations survive on a nutrient lacking diet. As an example, one of these countries’ is the Democratic Republic of Congo. This country is rated as the “poorest country in the world as of 2013” (Said, 2013). As the poorest country in the world, they do encounter and are one of the most poverty-ridden states in the world. Citizens who make less than US$350 a year are living in extreme poverty. With the majority of the population eating poor quality and low quantity amounts of food, many health risks occur. This ultimately leads into malnourishment, which is rapid throughout these countries. With starch rich diets consisting of small amounts of rice and grains, these people are not getting any proper nutrients for their body to survive at a normal pace. With deficiencies in Zinc, Iron, Vitamin A and D this can cause low white blood cell counts as well as other disorders and being more susceptible to illnesses. They explain how the problems are more than just low income or solely one cause. The problems are inter-correlated and have specific factors that influence poverty around the world. Some of the examples stated in the website are that the citizens have “poor access to health services and high risk of disease” as well as having “insufficient and unpredictable access to food” (80,000 Hours). Fixing of these two factors can influence how people suffering from poverty in the Third World countries can get themselves out of poverty. You cannot move forward in your life without being or having the right amount of nutrients in your diet. The population that lives in poverty is in a very deprived situation. As stated in the article, “impoverished people are less able to be productive, which slows their growth that could get them out of poverty” (80,000 Hours). Nearing the end of the article, it indicates different ways to help and contribute to the cause of eradicating poverty. First it mentions that poverty is an ongoing problem that is neglected all over the world and that more people need to be supportive and donate. The article brings up a great point discussing an average person lifestyle in a developed world, to a person in the Third World.
