Epidemiology Personal Statement

My biostatistics & epidemiology courses in medical school turned out to be my defining professional moment. I discovered my passion in research methodology and decided to pursue a future career in epidemiology ever since. My enjoyment of mathematics, and passion for medicine made me appreciate how epidemiology is an artistic and basic part of medicine in general, and public health in particular. I look for pursuing a master’s degree of public health (MPH) specializing in the field of epidemiology. Going to medical school and spent 6 year—away from the family—was very challenging experience that required sacrifice on my part to obtain my endeavor. While studying medicine, I embraced the biostatistics & epidemiology course as I found it the backbone of medical researches. My interest in the research started from my 4th year community class research

The demanding work environment refined my idea to collaborative practice and made me appreciate how cooperative and effective team could face medical dilemma. Public health was constantly pivotal in providing preventive measures, especially during the disease outbreak. I inspired by watching community medicine specialist operate side by side with both physicians and people to encounter the epidemic of cholera that occurred in Iraq last year. This practice had affirmed my sense toward public health as I found it vital to achieve healthy society. My work as a primary care physician in the rural area further gives me insight on the significance of preventive medicine in protecting people where the health delivery is near the impossible. Having led a vaccine campaign that targets the disadvantageous population in the remote area allows me to discover the compassionate side of public health.
