Many people have never heard of an epidemiologist, epidemiologists are responsible for studying and helping control patters of injury and disease in the human population. I found epidemiology to be very interesting because I did not know such a career existed. It is the perfect mixture of the health and science field which intrigued me to learn more about what they do. I would love to study how specific epidemics can impact humans and hopefully be able to find a vaccine for an epidemic one day.
Many epidemiologists usually specialize in one or more of the following specific fields, substance abuse, bioterrorism, injury, chronic disease, or infectious disease. Even though there are different areas of epidemiology that are available, they all

epidemiologists work can work in hospitals, laboratories, offices, colleges and even state or local health departments. Most epidemiologists spend time studying data in offices but, they also will work in laboratories and go out in their local area to administer studies and educate the local people. epidemiology is generally safe due to the many precautions taken before conducting experiments and interacting with people which help to greatly reduce the chance of them getting hurt. epidemiologists usually work a standard 8 almost 9 hour shift, occasionally they may have to spend extended time working to complete fieldwork or tend to public health issues.
The median annual salary for an epidemiologist was $65,270 in 2012. The average starting amount for an epidemiologist is around $40,000 while more experienced epidemiologists make over $100,000. The salary for an epidemiologist in Florida is $81,430 which is 24 percent higher than the national median salary. The amount an epidemiologist gets paid varies depending on how much experience that person has in their field and what they specialize in. This means epidemiologists salary will fluctuate throughout their
Mathematical models and computer simulations are important tool to investigate spread and control of infectious diseases. These two jointly build and test theories that are involved with complex biological systems related disease, getting quantitative conjectures, determining parameter sensitivities due to change and estimating parameters from data. It is important to state that modeling is very crucial in epidemiology since in most cases we cannot do experiments. Modelling gives better idea in e-epidemiology when the system is simulated with various parameters because conducting experiments in e-epidemiology is critical.
Instead of waiting for a condition to arise in the human body, people should practice preventive care to maintain ideal health and prevent illnesses from occurring in the first place. Preventive care includes such things as immunizations and vaccines, routine physicals, regular medical checkups and periodic colonoscopies.
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health related states or events in well-defined populations. The goal of epidemiology is to understand the causes of disease variation and limit disease, injury and death in a community by intervening to prevent or limit outbreaks or epidemics of disease and injury. Epidemiology provides the most compelling evidence for measuring environmental risk to humans. Epidemiologists are public health professionals who investigate occurrence of disease-or other health related conditions or events in specific populations. Epidemiology allows public health workers to organize, analyze & interpret statistical facts about health problems. The basic design strategies applied in epidemiological research can be generally categorized according to whether such investigations focus on reporting the distributions of disease or elucidating its determinants. All study designs involve descriptive and analytical type of comparison of exposure and disease status. Descriptive epidemiology focuses on the general characteristics of the distribution of a disease. Analytical epidemiology focuses on the determinants of a disease by testing the hypothesis formulated from descriptive studies to check whether a particular exposure causes or prevents disease.
I have always wanted to be a scientist and contribute something to the human cause and what better way to achieve this than by doing medical research? Medical school taught me the art of medicine and the research projects that I undertook taught me the science of medicine. What interests me the most is a path that combines the two, and one way to make that possible is to be an academic physician. I have always wanted to work in a teaching hospital or academic institution, one that would give me the opportunity to take care of patients, give me the time and resources to carry out trials and present them and to be able to interact with trainees.
I first considered a public health career when I interned at the Ghana Health Service Family Health Department as an undergraduate student. Participating in national meetings focused on strategies to reduce maternal mortality in Ghana, I recognized that, in order to create sustainable advances, it is crucial to address the underlying social inequalities that exacerbate adverse health outcomes. To advance this goal, I am seeking admission into the Global Health and Population Doctoral Program at the Harvard School of Public Health.
At the basic level epidemiologists study the distribution, incidence and control of diseases. They do such by a conducting an epidemiological investigation in order to accurately, rather than hastily, prevent more of the population from becoming contaminated and infected with the disease (Wheeling Jesuit University). An example of how this process takes place can be seen in Richard Prestons’s “The Hot Zone” when veterinarians
An obstetrician is a medical doctor who specializes in the management of pregnancy, labor and birth. They also receive specialized education in the area of the female reproductive system and surgical care. I am interested in this job because I like helping women with their pregnancy and help them take care of their self the right way while pregnant. I am also interested in this career because I would love to see the interesting thing in our bodies while pregnant and how the body works in many ways, which I will learn in medical school.
My health profession is focus on biostatistics. Biostatistics is a branch science of statistics, which is a core discipline in public health. It focuses on developing and applying the statistical techniques and methods to analyzed data to extract necessary information. Its interesting area does not limits to biological science, the research work covers medicine, pharmacy, public health and agriculture.[Wikipedia] As an integral part of public health, biostatistics is responsible for understanding a health event to design experiments, collecting data for the experiments, understanding the collected data and making inferences and interpretations base on the analyzed results. The interpretations could used to forecast a health event, identify any health trends and identify the factors effect the health event. [text book]
Medical anthropologists examine epidemic outbreaks through numerous approaches. According to Joralemon, “Epidemics offer particularly vivid demonstrations of the interconnections between biological, social, and cultural components in the human experience of disease” (2010:29). Many times these approaches cannot function on their own accord and rely on each other to solve the epidemic. It is the job of the medical anthropologist to put all the pieces of the disease puzzle together.
To begin with, we have to identify what exactly means for the words “public health”. In general, we usually divided into two different areas. Public health which refers to the health of the environment surrounding in public, such as public transport and public infrastructure. Another explanation of public health means to prevent disease produced by different channels and methods, which also is the most common meaning and what I will mainly working for this paper about public health. First of all, when people mentioned about public health, United States and Japan would be the first two countries to compare with. Because the United States and Japan are basically two of the countries that everybody thinks of the most robust public health system.
There are many diseases that fit into each of the four categories, if not one category, maybe two or more.
There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
Public Health is the most important aspect of medicine. My studies in Public Health will go a very long way to help me grasp the proper concepts and tools needed to work with the government to bring sustainable solutions to health care problems faced by various communities today. Public Health issues touch almost every family in the USA today. I know that if the health sector was better funded, better equipped, and better managed, with clear and effective policies, this kind of suffering could been avoided. I want to go into public health because I believe strongly that I can contribute not only to my fellow Americans, but also to people all over the world. I anticipate that through proper planning, interventions and implementation of effective policies, one will be able to bring about much-needed change through my work with an NGO or non-profit affiliated with the UN.
The requirements of a doctor vary by speciality. The most common route is a four year undergraduate degree, four years of medical school, and a three to seven year residency training. Once residency training has been completed a person is eligible for a medical license. The median salary is $111,630 annually and the projected growth from 2012-2022 is 18%. The salary varies based on the experience and specialty of a doctors field. Citations - Woodley, Emma C. "What Do Doctors Do? | Career Bear." Career Bear. Career Bear, 15 June 2015. Web. 01 Oct.
Throughout history, humans have had the eagerness to explore lands different from theirs, to discover new things and meet people different from them. However, despite this eagerness, there is still a resistance to accept those who will appear to be different among us. In America, when we think of prejudice we often think of it in terms of Blacks and Whites. However, prejudice has proven to be much more than that, it affects everyone – the homeless, middleclass, working class and even the rich people. As fellow humans, who are we to judge another person based on how they talk, dress, look or act? But yet we all do it, we judge people on how different they are from us. According to Webster’s dictionary, prejudice is a “preconceived judgment or opinion formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge”. It is “an irrational suspicion or hatred of a particular group, race or religion.”(1) To me, prejudice is a disease, with symptoms like fear, intolerance, ego, segregation, hatred, and discrimination, that affects people all over the world and that hardly has a cure for it. In this paper I will be discussing 3 different types of this disease (racial, gender and sexual prejudices) that have reared their ugly heads throughout all the Civil rights movements that we have studied this term. Education and communication are the first steps in resolving prejudice in humankind.
