Entertainment holds the attention and interest of an audience; it gives pleasure and delight, it lets people forget about any problems in their lives. Entertainment was specifically designed for the purpose of keeping an audience's attention. Long ago people started with: art, music, wall paintings, and stories. Entertainment has been around for far too long to hold the capacity to ruin such a concept as a society. It at times may portray itself as necessities for life .People thrive upon the happiness and laughter caused by an amusing situation, and this entertainment fulfills such desire for people. Entertainment does not possess the capability to destroy society; in order for humanity to grow, relax and experience, individuals need to be open to all forms of entertainment.
Entertainment prevailed from the very outset of the human story. People looked for ways to enjoy their spare time. Reading has been a source of entertainment for a very long time. In early American times as well as today individuals would entertain themselves through reading books, pamphlets and newspapers. They were not difficult to get a hold of and were filled with insightful information .In the 1700s Thomas Paine’s pamphlet “Common Sense” was tremendously popular. The pamphlet was one of the first widely disseminated pieces of writing that the American people could get in touch with .At a time when settlers were still debating on whether or not they wanted to fight for independence against the British, the pamphlet was able to convince the American people why the battle for freedom was essential. Even 100 years ago entertainment benefited society. Without the need for a source of entertainment where would we as a people be? After a period of time peop...

The eighteenth century, a time of turmoil and chaos in the colonies, brought many opinionated writers to the forefront in support or refutation of the coming American Revolution. This highly controversial war that would ultimately separate the future United States of America from Great Britain became the center of debate. Two writers, both of whom supported the Revolution, now stand to fully illuminate one side of the debate. Thomas Paine, a radical propagandist, wrote many pieces during this time including “The Crisis Number 1” (1776). Through writing, he appealed to the “common man” in order to convince them to gather their arms and fight for their freedom. In this document, he utilizes many of the same rhetorical skills and propaganda techniques as Patrick Henry, a convincing orator, did in his famous speech delivered to the state’s delegates in 1775. Among these techniques are transfer, abstract language, and pathos. In both works, these were used to call the audiences to war. These influential pieces both contained a call to action which, through the use of strong and decisive language, aided the beginning of the American Revolution.
While there is a very sound argument regarding whether or not entertainment had the capacity to ruin society. One must consider that entertainment can be interpreted differently by each individual. Entertainment, in general, can be either beneficial or detrimental to society which varies on the use of all the outlets of entertainment. Although there are negatives that are created from entertainment there are positive factors which arise from music, video games, and television.
Thomas Paine’s Common Sense was a powerful and successful propaganda weapon used to promote his idea of independence from Britain. In order to prove that seeking independence was necessary at this time in history, Paine wrote about the relationship between society and government, his opinions about the British monarchy and the King, and the freedoms he believed had been stolen from the colonists. Common Sense was written in terms that were easily relatable to the colonist of this time period. After they finished reading his work, many colonists’ opinions about the British were swayed by his strong words. Even though Paine arrived in America quite late, he was able to make a significant difference by changing the colonists’ views, which ultimately
It may be hard to admit, but television has become an intricate part of our everyday lives. People children often find themselves sitting in front of the television screen for a longer period of time than before and this has evolved immensely over the past few years. In this article, “The Trouble with Television,” by the author Marie Winn, mentions that addiction of television is negative effects on children and families. It keeps the families from doing other things and it’s a hidden competitor for all other activities. Television takes place of play and on top of that kids who watch a lot of television grow uncivilized. Also, the author mentioned that televisions are less resourceful for children and have negative effects on children’s school achievement and on physical fitness. Although there are so many other types of addictions but the author Marie Winn’s points of argument of watching television is a serious addiction that our children and families have negative effects.
In “The Closing of the American Book,” published in the New York Times Magazine, Andrew Solomon argues about how the decline of literary reading is a crisis in national health, politics, and education. Solomon relates the decline of reading with the rise of electronic media. He believes that watching television and sitting in front of a computer or a video screen instead of reading can cause the human brain to turn off, and lead to loneliness and depression. He also argues that with the decrease of reading rates, there will no longer be weapons against “absolutism” and “terrorism,” leading to the United States political failure in these battles. The last point Solomon makes is that there is no purpose behind America being one of the most literate societies in history if people eradicate this literacy, and so he encourages everyone to help the society by increasing reading rates and making it a “mainstay of community.” Solomon tries to show the importance of reading in brain development and he encourages people to read more by emphasizing the crisis and dangers behind the declination of reading.
One of the most influential political thinkers in history, Thomas Paine, influenced American Political theory through the distribution of his pamphlet Common Sense. Pamphlets allow for quick distribution of information or ideas about a single subject or interest. They allow for a quick read, and are able to be passed along and distributed with ease. However sometimes pamphlets are not the...
Video games have positive and negative aspects. Acording to a study, those who spend hours and hours in playing ‘civic games’ were found to take more part in different community services like social work, politics or protests, as compared to those who never took interest in vidoe games. Hence video games are proved to increase one’s social interaction skills. The kind of friendship and ethics that are learnt by the young gamers while playing video games provide evidence that they are not completely harmful to our society. (Heins, 62)
...ger effect than what it could be. Society should try to help persuade others that video games positively effect the nation and others who play it. Video games were created for positive reasons, and to increase human-kind’s technology and graphics. Let’s all call to action to help defend players and their games, as one can see they have major benefits that could improve society further than it already is.
When thinking of killing, drugs and nudity, I’m pretty sure not many people think of positive ideas. Electronics, such as television and computers, show these kinds of things regularly. Despite this explicit material, some people see the constantly improving technology as a wonderful addition to our lives. Yet as time passes, more and more people start to have doubts about what these developments in technology are leading to. Kids and teens should be playing and using their imaginations; instead they devote countless hours on various electronics ranging from tablets and computers to phones and TV’s. These inventions often show explicit and inappropriate material which corrupts children, and are slowly ruining society’s social skills.
“Many parents, psychologists and health experts feared that long hours spent watching television led to a number of problems, including: a negative effect on the social and emotional development of children; a reduction in the quality of family life; increasing obesity rates and a direct correlation between violence on television and the aggressive behavior of children in other situations.” (Entertainment). Technology has also brought in video for kids and adults to play, it is also a great way to pass time. Netflix is also a big part of technology’s entertainment, people can sit back and watch movies basically anywhere. One last way is YouTube, kids and adults are always on YouTube for the
Overall, the article is mainly talking about the TV show brings a misunderstanding of society and bad influence to the viewer. Yet, we must ask ourselves: Does TV show only have negative influence on viewer? Do the media really change our mind? Can TV show educate the young generation?
Movies, TV programs have been a major part of our life entertainment, as watching films in the cinema or on the living room couch with friends or families at leisure, while actually, the impact that the movies and TV programs have on this society has already reached further than just entertainment. Some people might conceive that the movies are just made for divertissement, which should not be taken seriously, and that a movie needs stereotyped characters to make it looks interesting, representative, and attractive. However, the fact is a diametrically opposite that the so-called entertainment media is exactly molding people’s mind and attitude towards social issues and towards the
Texting in school by students and teachers takes away valuable class time. Video games become addictive and make people become numb to violence. Parents and their strive for constant communication, also holds them responsible for the technology epidemic. The Internet makes cheating and multitasking inevitable. Internet Porn easily allows crude films in the American home.
The gaming industry is a leading company when it comes to entertainment, especially among young children and teens. Technology has become an enormous necessity in everyday life and many, whether young or old, always seem to have some form of it on their person at all times. It may be something as simple as car keys with an electronic lock system or even more common, the cell phone, but majority of the devices we have today have become, in a sense to some, basic necessities, objects that they cannot go a single day without. So why does everyone question why children are so glued to technology; parents provide it, encourage it, but when is it “too much?”. Then it comes down to television and video games. The vast majority of the youth of today are increasingly sucked in...
Every morning along with my alarm, I am greeted by notifications from the news, social media, and celebrities. Throughout my day I continue to experience literature, news, and social media. Before bed, like countless other teenagers, I like to relax by watching a TV show on the ever-popular streaming website, Netflix. Needless to say, entertainment is always present in today 's society. Entertainment has the capacity to be informative and enjoyable: a source of relaxation and mindless fun. However, it is what we, as members of society, do with entertainment that determines the impact it will have on our society. While it can be beneficial, entertainment does indeed have the capacity to “ruin.” Not only does the broader entertainment industry
