Her audience was assembled by the Connecticut Women’s Suffrage Association, under the leadership of Katherine Houghton Hepburn. Pankhurst’s audience was aware that, four months earlier, on June 4 1913, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) member Emily Davison had put herself in the running track of the King’s horse during the Derby.
