Elizabeth Glaser, co-founder of the Pediatric AIDS foundation, was infected with the AIDS virus during a blood transfusion when she was giving birth to her first child. Her daughter became quite ill in 1985 and after several tests and treatments the entire family was tested for the human immunodeficiency virus. Elizabeth, her daughter, Ariel, and her son, Jake, all tested positive. She then went to Washington D.C. to help fight AIDS and raise awareness for the cause. She met with several influential politicians, activists, and first ladies including President Reagan, Nancy Reagan, and Barbara Bush to discuss ways to improve HIV care and research. She worked with congress and raised the budget to help fight pediatric AIDS from 3.3 million to One example of Ethos is “I started out just a mom-fighting for the life of her child. But along the way I learned how unfair America can be today, not just for people who have HIV, but for many,many people-poor people, gay people, people of color, children.” She shows to the audience that she understands the struggles of the aforementioned groups, because she has HIV. She understands just how unfair America can be to people who don’t fit in. She knows that she doesn’t seem like the best representative for the group of people she mentioned, but she wants the audience at the DNC to know that she has their best interests at heart. Mrs. Glaser wants the DNC audience to join her in the fight against AIDS. Glaser also uses Pathos in her speech. “Exactly four years ago, my daughter died of AIDS. She did not survive the Reagan Administration. I am here because my son and I may not survive four more years of leaders who say they care, but do nothing.” In this appeal Mrs. Glaser is appealing to her audience’s emotions, especially the emotions one feels when talking about their family like love and empathy. She mentions that her daughter has died because of this disease and that her son and herself are dying as well to show that this is a disease that can affect anyone and that it is crucial to work on cures or vaccinations to prevent others from suffering the way her family has. In this speech, Chisholm uses ethos, pathos, and logos to argue her point of equal rights. An example of ethos that could be found in the speech is when Chisholm says “The Constitution they wrote was designed to protect the rights of white, male citizens. As there were no black Founding Fathers, there were no founding mothers -- a great pity, on both counts. It is not too late to complete the work they left undone. What’s going to make them believe this author has something to say that is actually worth listening to? It goes as far as the process it took for the author to make the article. Little things like the ones mentioned in this analysis: demographics of the subjects, interview styles and experience, which contribute to the process of making her article, could become big things when it comes to the author’s use of ethos, because it’s all about credibility. The process is where ethos is established for the most part and that’s where Anderson made most of her “little” mistakes.
Isabella Baumfree, otherwise known as Sojourner Truth, was born to James and Elizabeth Baumfree as a slave around 1797 in Ulster County, New York. She was a slave of a Dutch family, the Hardenberghs, but once her owner died, she was sold at an auction for the first time to a Englishman, John Neely. Since she could only speak Dutch while Neely spoke English, it was difficult for them to communicate and as a result, Neely would constantly beat her brutally. She had suffered as a slave such as being spit on, threatened, and beaten aggressively to the point that she had scars on her body, blood trickling down from her body, and many wounds.

Glaser was a well-known, upper class, white woman, so her contraction of this disease shocked people and gave the disease a new wave of media during a time when the government was trying to push the issue under the table. Fisher’s purpose is “to lift the shroud of silence which has been draped over the issue of HIV/AIDS” epidemic (1).
