One of the greatest speakers for the black civil rights movement was Martin Luther King, Jr. Two of his pieces that stand out the most, was the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and “I Have a Dream”. The Letter From Birmingham Jail is exactly that, it’s a letter that King had wrote while he was in jail, to a group of clergy members who disapproved of his action in Birmingham City. I Have a Dream was speech that was delivered in Washington, DC at Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. This speech was written to inspire people to look beyond themselves and also demanded the country unity focusing on equality for all without focusing on the color of their skin; King also wanted the people to take a stand in a nonviolence manner. The Letter from Birmingham Jail and I Have a Dream, have many similarities and differences between the two pieces.
There are many similarities between I Have a Dream and the Letter from Birmingham Jail. Both of the pieces have many rhetorical appeals in common, whether it is pathos, logos, ethos or even repetition. In the speech, “I Have a Dream”, one pathos part that had stand out the most was, “ I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. This quote is so emotional because it was not about what King wanted for himself but for his children, it also stand out because it make the audience thinks about their children and how they wouldn’t want their kids going through what they was going through, which makes it even more important to put end to racism. There are even logos appeals, “ Is organized religion too inextricably bound to the status quo to save our nations and the world?”, King states his opinion in a question to show an idea that should be considered, even if the reader does not agree with him, it also makes the reader question their own ideas or opinion on the topic.
Overall, there are many similarities and differences between I Have a Dream and the Letter from Birmingham Jail, the two pieces together makes a strong point but apart they show different point of views.
The most obvious similarity between the two essays is the overarching theme of the subject matter. In both essays, the writers address deeply-entrenched social injustices. For example, in "Letter From Birmingham Jail", King, in his highly-impassioned and evocative style, submits a powerful essay that addresses racial segregation in the American South during the 1950s and 1960s. In his letter, King mentions that the brutal history of the "American Negro's" trials and tribulations measured by the impact of the social injustices that they had suffered were traceable to the era of slavery, a history that had rooted long before President Lincoln's "Emancipation Proclamation" was written (5).
Granted, both essays effectively implement both emotional and ethical appeal to the reader in order to be persuasive, and each, given the right conditions has the potential to be equally effective. But, given the conditions we are under, including the time frame, ("Civil Disobedience" was written over one hundred years before "Letter From a Birmingham Jail") King's essay, overall, features more of the characteristics, as well as the accessibility to produce a higher level of comprehension and relevance for the reader.
The similarity between Susan B. Anthony speech and Martin Luther King Juniors “I Have a Dream” speech is that they are fighting for the equality of America. Susan B. Anthony is fighting for women being able to vote like everyone else. Martin Luther King is fighting for the equality of African Americans. Both just want to see America as an equal place instead of discrimination against others based on race or gender. Even though their message has similarities the way they delivered them was different.
The letter provoked King and “the Letter from Birmingham jail” was a written response to the white clergy men and to defend the strategy of non-violent protesting. Throughout the letter, King used many stylistic writing elements and effective emotional appeal to make people want to join his case. His emotional appeal begins when he stated: “The nations of Asia and Africa are moving with jet like speed toward gaining political independence, but we still creep at horse-and-buggy pace toward gaining a cup of coffee at a lunch counter.” And his emotional appeal continues and gets more effective when he describes the suffering life of black people who are suffering from racism and injustice:” when you take a country-cross drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the corner of an automobile because no hotel would accept you; when you are humiliated day in and day out, you are by nagging signs reading ‘white’ and ‘colored’”. This makes people want to join his case and makes his followers more determined about protesting against racial injustice.

He answers to this by saying that many historical figures today are considered heroes were thought to be extremists during their time. He quotes people such as Jesus Christ, the apostle Paul, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. He uses reason to create a logical appeal to the reader. That is if he is an extremist for campaigning for freedom, then all of these other people are extremist as well. Using second hand evidence and the proof of others can too be used in constructing logical appeals. He forces his readers to think about the execution of millions of Jews that was ordered by Hitler. Christianity is the absolute most influential idea in today’s society. What individuals perceive as right and wrong is actually based on Christianity. So by using religion in his letter, King was able to connect and force the clergymen to engage in his words. Overall, “Letter to Birmingham Jail” is very convincing in justifying the civil disobedience and morals of dealing with the civil rights. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.” (King 853) King is appealing to his audience that though wrongful doing has been done to them, they need to be the better person by not stooping to the level of injustice they had previously had to endure. In both Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail and I Have a Dream speech is employed pathos, however its means and purpose differ. In the letter it is used in a more discreet way as a support for the facts given with the objective of generate some revolt or discontent from the opposed side after showing the oppressed side.
