In the Catholic faith, there are seven sacraments. They are baptism, reconciliation, eucharist, confirmation, matrimony, holy orders and anointing of the sick. This year, the majority of the grade seven students are receiving the sacrament of confirmation. For confirmation, we have been asked to choose a Saint. For my Saint, I chose someone that I look up to. I chose Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. Elizabeth Ann Seton (formerly known as Elizabeth Ann Bayley) was born on August 28, 1774 to Richard Bayley and Catherine Charlton. She was raised in the Episcopalian faith. Sadly, she died January 4, 1821, which happens to be her feast day. Elizabeth Ann Seton was canonized September 14, 1975. She is the patron Saint of bakers, countesses, death of children, falsely accused, the homeless, nursing services, tertiaries, widows, and young brides. She was the second child of Richard Bayley and Catherine Charlton. Unfortunately, Elizabeth never got to know her mother as Mrs. Charlton had passed away in 1777 when Elizabeth was three years old. Elizabeth Ann Seton is someone I greatly admire. She was a brave, intelligent and determined person. Being persecuted for her faith and going through so many hard times never stopped her from following her heart and proclaiming God’s word. She was one of the first saints I ever learned about. We also have a lot in common. I share her love of music, poetry and nature. She was also fluent in French. I speak French as well. I was especially interested in learning more about her because she wasn’t born catholic and neither was I. Originally, I was baptized as a protestant, but became Catholic when I was about seven years old. Studying the saints has better prepared me for my upcoming Confirmation and I now know that there is a saint out there whom I can relate
