The short story “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck told of a woman who strived to do more than what she was allowed. The protagonist, Elisa, was approached by a man who was a traveling craftsman looking to make some money. During his visit, Elisa opened herself to this man in a way that was very revealing to the reader. As I read this story Elisa became a very relatable character that felt out of place and trapped by the people and places around her. She demonstrates a very capable woman that is filled with passion who hasn’t had the chance to show her full potential. At the beginning of the story, Elisa responds to the traveling craftsman the same way I would have. She gave him the cold shoulder, expecting him to move along and with each attempt, Elisa politely refused his services. This is very similar to how people react to people trying to make money on the road. Most people think about this as paying someone to fix something that they could do themselves. If you could do it yourself and save the money then why waste hard earned money. This thought process helped me connect to Elisa and how she interacted with the craftsman. …show more content…

He notices Elisa’s plants that she was working on and asks her what they are. When the craftsman does this, Elisa opens up to him and he has established a connection through Elisa’s love for the Chrysanthemums that she raises each year. When reading this, I found that I wanted to tell Elisa to be careful of this man. He was only looking to make money off of Elisa, but she saw this as a way to escape from her monotonous lifestyle. I felt bad for Elisa at this point because she saw this man as a way to do more with her life and he had no intention of helping her beyond the money he could make from fixing her pots and
