Self-discovery is finding who you really are in the inside, not what you are on the outside. Identity is your personality. It’s what you believe in, it’s what you enjoy doing, and it’s what makes you, you. Different kinds of people can learn about themselves from coming upon a scary or near-death experience. Also, learning new things about yourself can be shown through living somewhere or someplace where you are not accepted. Eleanor Roosevelt, from Eleanor Roosevelt had to live in a time period where women weren’t treated as equals and where African Americans weren’t treated fairly. This didn’t stop Eleanor. When her husband Franklin Roosevelt was stricken with polio, she helped him with politics, although it wasn’t something women usually did. When Eleanor was a kid, she was treated poorly and she was very lonely. Eleanor’s identity changed when she decided she needed to become more involved in everything. She changed from being sad and lonely because she didn't have the courage to do something women usually don do, but when she did it, she became happy that she was involved. This proves how someone's identity can change through living in a tough time period because she wasn’t accepted because of her gender. It changed even more when her husband was struck with polio. Even when Franklin Roosevelt died, she stayed positive. Identity tries to define who people are, what they are, where they go or what they want to be or to do. Identity could depend on self-knowledge, self-esteem, or the ability of individuals to achieve their goals. Through self-analysis people can define who they are and who the people around them are. The most interesting point about identity is that some people know what they want and who they are, while it takes forever for others to figure out the factors mentioned before. Youngs, was published in 2005 by Pearson Longman Inc. and is also part of the Library of American Biography Series, edited by Mark C. Carnes. The biography itself and all of its contents are 292 pages. These pages include a table of contents, an editor’s and author’s preface, acknowledgments, illustrations, study and discussion questions, a note on the source, and an index. The biography of Eleanor Roosevelt (1884 – 1962), wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 – 1945), pays great respects to whom Youngs believes to be the most influential woman during the 20th century. By writing one third of the book on E. Roosevelt’s early life, Youngs is able to support his thesis which states that E. Roosevelt’s suffering, and the achievements of her early years made it possible for her to be known as the greatest American woman of the twentieth century. While Youngs was able to support this theory throughout the book, he failed to tie his original thoughts up towards his conclusion, making his original thesis hard to follow.
