Another issue with genetically altered food is that they have attributed to higher pollution of pesticides. Lastly, people dislike genetically modified foods because they see there is less regulation on them from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) than there are on other products put in the market (The Issues). Many consumers and farmers have discovered that living in an industrialized culture where the focus has become faster, bigger, and cheaper is not the best way to produce our food. Obsessed with productivity, the agriculture industry is reaping the negative consequences of creating an unsustainable environment for food production. Time and time again, the media captures stories regarding deadly bacterial contamination and dangerous pesticide contamination causing illness and death in our communities. The environment is also damaged and contaminated. This devastating trend, due to irresponsible farming practices as a result of the industrialization of the food industry, has become all too common.
Scientists have been changing genomes of plants and animals by integrating new genes from a different species through genetic engineering, creating a genetically modified organism (GMO). Consumers in America have been eating GMOs since 1996, when they went on the market. There are benefits to genetically modifying crop plants, as it improves the crop quality and increases yield, affecting the economy and developing countries. But there are also negative effects from GMOs. Consumption of GMOs has various health effects on both body systems of animals and humans.
A huge amount of scientists and doctors have concerns about GMO and the health threats they pose. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) did animal tests and reports that GMO dangers may include infertility, immune system disorders, accelerated aging, GI system changes, insulin regulation problems, and allergies. GM foods that are widely known are pineapples, strawberries and potatoes. GM foods are supposed to last longer, have more nutrients, taste better and more crops are harvested because the amount of food increases. There are some effects GM crops may have on the environment.
With so many GE crops being grown, the crops have to go somewhere, and that somewhere is in the food consumers eat. Very many products at grocery stores and markets contain some sort of GE product with the consumer having little to no knowledge that it even contains a GE product. The reason this is controversial is because GE products can have adverse effects to the human body, these effects can include a simple allergic reaction, toxin build up in the body, and an increased risk of cancer. Without proper labeling, officials would not be able to track which product contains a GE product effectively, especially if a certain product is causing adverse health effects. Major Stakeholders Major Stakeholders of labeling GE products include, all consumers that do not grow their own food, food producers, food regulators, farmers of GE crops, and investors.
Various artificial ingredients that are commonly placed in the American diet include hormones and steroids. Major problems faced by the modern food industry includes food contamination, hormonal imbalance and obesity. Although there are many negative aspects of the American Diet, there are ways to reduce the problems that occur within the diet. A lot of people are unaware of the ingredients that food contains and resulting from that, there are various problems that occur within Americans. With all the processed foods that tie in with the American diet, fast foods and preservatives seem to be very popular.
