Stereotyping is evolving everyday into a normality in most societies in the entire world. The everyday person can see it occur on a daily basis, and probably cannot point it out sometimes now, because of how sensitized they have become to stereotyping. It is usually targeted towards many audiences and many take it very offensively. Others love to take it as a joke and joke around with stereotyping. Such harassment, or fun, can be seen in humanities everyday movies, books, music, news, and overall pop culture. In some way or form, everyone feels stereotyping. The big question here is whether or not stereotyping really does determine who a person can be or if it simply a negative intake of the person being too sensitive? Most people see it in blockbuster films when it comes to casting. Music genres seem to also have a separation between cultures that listen to a specific genre. Certain public gatherings put a huge gap between people; for example comic book conventions, anime expos, firearm expos, fashion expos, and the list goes on forever with the different kinds of conventions or expositions. One big form of stereotyping within cultures influenced by pop culture are sports groups. The imagery, stance, and or reason by why certain sports groups use certain things to promote their teams. For example in the article, “Appropriating Native American Imagery Honors No One but the Prejudice” by Amy Stretten, it gives a great break down about how a sports team can really affect the everyday life of a person. Stretten shares her story growing up in school and having to live with a mascot and school name that would make her feel unsafe, because it harassed her culture and background of being Native American. Even though it does take harassment towards Native American’s, these people probably were taking it as just having fun and enjoying themselves. Stretten expresses her anger and why these sports teams are just being offensive. “Racial stereotyping, inaccurate racial portrays, and culture appropriation do not honor a living breathing people. Plain and simple, culture appropriation - especially when members of the culture protest the appropriation - is not respectful(page 523, Everything’s An Argument),” Stretten explains how this form of stereotyping feels. She connects the stereotyping with culture appropriation. The way Stretten feels about how certain sport teams stereotype her, is something how many others might feel across the nation.
