Confidence: Confidence can be defined as the positive feeling that you can achieve a certain goal. Confidence is not hoping for something to happen it is the something that u expect to happen. Self confidence is when a person believes he/she can achieve a certain goal on his/herself. A self confident athlete will show enthusiasm and be positive even if things do not go according to plan. For example, a confident team captain will not bring negative thoughts into the team players head when they are losing. Confidence can be separated into two categories, trait confidence and state confidence. A low confidence level will bring in negative thoughts, the athlete will feel fear and will be scared to take part, the athlete will also focus non-relevant tasks or on others rather than focusing on the task at hand and will not be very productive in the game and will lack effort and commitment, that player will be the “weak link”. Effects of High and Low Confidence on Athletes 1. High Confidence will affect an athlete positively most of the time. There are certain times where high confidence can lead to negative results this is mainly due to “over confidence”. Listed below are few affects of high confidence on an athlete: • Increased Performance- if the athlete has a high level of self-confidence the players’ performance will increase due to the positive psychological state the athlete is in. When an athlete is self confident the athlete will not doubt him/herself as he/she knows that they can achieve the task.
