Edwin Hubble “I knew that even if I were second or third rate, it was astronomy that mattered.” This quote is from Edwin Hubble, the man who discovered the cosmos. Hubble was a young ambitious yet presumptuous scientist who changed mankind’s perception of the universe forever. Hubble is best known for his discovery that the universe was indeed expanding and not static; as previously thought. He was born in Missouri 1889 and moved to Chicago when he was nine and then later graduated from the University of Chicago in 1910 with a degree in Mathematics and Astronomy. After he graduated from the University of Chicago, he earned a Rhodes scholarship for his both athletic and academic capabilities. At Oxford, Hubble promised his dying and wilting father that he would stop pursuing his passion of Astronomy, which his father hated, and go to law school. After teaching at a high school for a short time he found that even though he gave his word to his father to study law, his passion for astronomy was just too strong so he made the history changing decision to go back t...
