Several researches have demonstrated that correctional education programs have an impact on the recidivism rate. The correctional system should implement educational programs in all prisons and jails. Correctional educational programs should be mandatory to all prisoners. The correctional system should offer inmates different educational programs; as a result, they would be more interested in taking the programs. Through education the correctional system could change many offenders’ perspective toward the world. This would be beneficial for the inmates and the communities. There are many inmates who deserve a second chance, who did not have the opportunity to receive an education. Also, there are many inmates who do not know how to read and write because they did not have the opportunity to achieve an education. However, on Hall’s study (2015), explained that “administrators and policy makers have failed to understand this finding and continue support the elimination of funding for inmates” (p. 25). Due to the fund cutting, many correctional institutions have eliminated college education programs in several states. When policy makers enact policies that affect correctional programs, it affects our society. If inmates do not learn anything during their time in prison, they are very likely to return to the same community, rejoin the same gangs, and commit the same type of crime repeatedly.
