4.3 Economic Motivation Economic motivations is main reason that spur FDWs to work in Singapore. There are two aspects of economic motivation, firstly, when one earns money to support their family back in the Philippines and secondly, when one has earns enough money for their family and seeks to improve their own lives. Even with economic reasons driving their stay in Singapore, participants eventually develop a sense of belonging to Singapore . 4.3.1 Family Support Participants have named family support as a key reason behind working in Singapore, despite homesickness or poor treatment that they may face. Once participants have settled the basic need of providing for their family, they start to yearn for materialistic upgrades in their life. Jose shares with us why she has not gone home despite earning enough for her family: Then my children also like that, my mother said "it’s time for you to go home, all your children finish already education so what are you doing?" I said “I don’t have a big houses yet. I don't have a big car.” This sentiment is shared in our participants where once they have experienced a stable income and better life in Singapore, they prefer to stay here to earn more instead of returning to Philippines, hence ending up staying in Singapore for a long time. 4.3.3 Sense of Belonging After the initial stage of homesickness and getting used to the life in Singapore, the next step that follows would be developing a sense of belonging to the host country. Jose, who has worked in Singapore since 1992, prefers to stay in Singapore rather than returning to the Philippines. She states, “I try to go back so often. but for me, I want only 2 weeks. I don’t like one month… yeah but I want to come back here in Singapore
