America has always valued freedom. In its colonial days, the whole reason for discontent with the British rule was their lack of regard for colonists’ rights. In response to England’s treatment of them, especially when it came to “taxation without representation,” the Founding Fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence called for the protection of man’s rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” This eventually came to include the right to free enterprise and free and open markets as part of the liberty and pursuit of happiness. Economic freedom is the freedom to choose what to produce, how to make the product, and how to sell it, while respecting other’s rights to do so. An individual can be free to prosper without intervention by the government and at the same having their right to secure resources, labor, and private property protected. Within this is free enterprise and free and open markets. Under free enterprise, individuals or groups are able to operate and compete with other businesses. Similar to this is free and open markets, where individuals or groups can buy or sell goods and services at fair prices. Without economic freedom, people are unable to improve their living conditions. Without economic freedom, people might as well be slaves under the oppression of their masters. The masters could choose to make goods and services practically impossible to buy, leading to misery among the people. As long as the people at the top get their goods, services, and money, why should they care about the people they step on? Everyone needs the ability to get what they need to live happily and comfortably. Though for some, their situations may make it difficult to gain happiness. Nonetheless, there is the opportunity to do so. Those with the want to improve their living and the will and perseverance to pursue it may one day gain the happiness they deserve. That is something they are only able to gain if there is economic

The American ideals in regards to freedom along with other human rights are not unique to the United States. In fact many of these freedoms and other rights found within the American declaration of independence were in fact copied from the Englishmen John Locke who wrote extensively on the subject nearly a century before the declaration even came into existence. Throughout history, Americans have sought to spread the spirit of equality, which is believed to be the realization of true freedom. Before establishing this freedom, every American had only one question stuck in their head: What is freedom? Our country received it in the year of 1776 from the British through a series of difficulties and wars. African Americans defined it as an escape from slavery, while immigrants defined it as their acceptance into a new society. More yet, women of the women’s suffrage defined their freedom as their recognition into society and for their rights to be equal to that of every other man. These different perceptions of cultures/groups in America tied together to form an American view of freedom. Freedom is something that every American should be willing to do anything in order to maintain. We may have weapons of mass destruction, but when it comes to living in a peaceful, American lifestyle, our freedom is our greatest weapon.
Free enterprise is very important in an ever growing world. The idea of free enterprise, or capitalism, is that any individual has the opportunity to create a business and sell a good or provide a service with almost no government intervention. A capitalistic economy helps both the supplier of goods and the consumer of the goods. One of capitalism’s basic principles is that an individual works hard for incentives. Free enterprise means that businesses are directed by the laws of supply and demand. Capitalism also forces businesses to produce things in an efficient way. Another great aspect about free enterprise is that there is a lot of flexibility in the economy. These are just some of the many factors that make a free enterprise economy so important.
We have the right to any freedoms because of “The Declaration of Independence”, we can be who we want to be. Everyone is unique and has varying views on everything, independence is a widely accepted and preferred that has become necessary, but it doesn’t have to be like that all the time.
The American Revolution was marked by the colonies’ independence from Britain. This separation pronounced a new age marked by a decisive political change in the colonies because of the implementation of the Enlightenment ideals and the continuation of English liberties. However, the American Revolution was considered a conservative movement because it “originated from an effort to preserve the existing liberties of the colonies rather than create new ones” (Strayer, 782). Furthermore, the revolution occurred not on the issue of taxation, but on the issue of representation. The colonists believed autonomy was part of their birthright and as Englishmen along with their economic rights and their “natural rights to life, liberty, and property” (Kramnick, Lockean Liberalism). These two sentiments can be seen in their famous slogan “No taxation without representation”. What is the Declaration of Independence? The declaration of independence states that all individuals have inalienable rights, requiring life, liberty, and property, a document by which the thirteen colonies proclaimed their independence from Great Britain. If these rights are not protected, people have the right to abolish the government and institute a new one that is willing to secure those rights and their happiness. The declaration was written by Jefferson when he had the vision that America should be liberal. While liberals wanted to over through the government, conservatives believed that not every person should receive the same privilege, not every person is the same and therefore, not every person should be created equal. America is viewed as a liberal state. Thomas Jefferson once said, “When the people fear the government, there is tyranny, when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” This was the strongest reason for the people to bear arms, so that they can be protected from tyranny in the government. People wanted their independence.
One reason described to be a cause of happiness is income. Don Peck and Ross Douthat indicate how, “National income appears to be one of the best single predictors of overall well-being, explaining perhaps 40 percent of the difference in contentment among nations” (352). With this statement, comes the explanation of how income can influence happiness in adults who strive to earn a living. Research illustrates how, “For individual countries, with few exceptions, self-reported happiness has increased as incomes have risen” (Douthat 352). While these two statements provide sufficient evidence for the reason of income bringing happiness, income itself is not relevant.

Some believe prosperity will bring them happiness. Others believe material, power, fame, success, or love will bring them happiness. In Smith’s The Wealth of Nations he defines liberty as freedom from constraint. From this he suggests to limit government involvement within the market. Instead, have the market determine the prices of goods and at what amount wages should be. Money can easily make a person temporarily happy with the possessions it can buy, but true happiness is more than that. People can have everything material wise and still not be happy. Sure it can buy you many things, but the happiness from it is only temporary and limited. There’s only so much happiness you can buy with money.
