Murphy’s Law
Duane Murphy was introduced to the world of FRC in 2004, when his daughter’s elementary school principal recommended he come and visit Team 701. The RoboVikes have cherished him, as a mentor, ever since. He has been many things to the team: a programming advisor, lead mentor, treasurer, but above all, a father figure to all of the students. The team is made up of strong people with even stronger opinions, inciting many arguments, but the family is so tightly knit that these faze no one. Murphy excels at not allowing these disputes to go too far, after all, it has been his job for over a decade. He knows when to spur the conversation forward and when to put the brakes on. Murphy would never judge a student for experimenting―in fact, he encourages it―one of the many reasons everyone on the team is so at ease with him. Another would be how often he is in the workshop. Even when he is stuck at work, he is only a message away on Slack, a team messaging service commonly used in the software industry, or reachable through the FRC701 organization on GitHub. He is the embodiment of expertise coupled with the ability to share his knowledge. New members’ first introductions to Murphy are through the summer classes he teaches, helping them find their place, not only as RoboVikes but, going into high school. Seeing Murphy’s review on a pull request end with “LGTM” (Looks Good to Me), builds a student’s confidence. That comment means students can merge their code with a new feature into master without fear for bugs being solely their fault. The team is accountable for the team’s mistakes, Murphy teaches this every day.
On the road, the 11 seats in the “Murphy Van” are an opportunity to soak up his knowledge and experience. At competitions, after making sure everything's running smoothly with our robot, he becomes one of Team 701’s biggest cheerleaders. However, when something does go wrong, he is the first one to be called. Murphy inspires students to communicate issues with him and each other.
