Taunna, you have provided a great example of a simple medication that was significantly complicated by the adverse effects of the drug. I thought the approach you did to the patient then was significant despite some apparent stumbling block in the extent of our clinical practice.
In the course of your discussion, it hit me just how difficult the task is of creating and maintaining open communication pathways for the entirety of the staff especially if you are dealing with individuals who may have a higher level due to their expertise. I must admit that as clinicians, we have limited formal training with reference to drug therapies and how it bring about a huge impact to a patient’s rehabilitation outcome. In today’s healthcare scenario, we deal with individuals who have co-morbidities and into multi-drug therapies in order to address their physical concerns. As a physical therapist, we play a substantial role in healthcare especially that we provide rehabilitative care to patients who have certain limitations with mobility and whatnot, impaired function due to injuries or a disease process and those with functional disabilities. However, these individuals who seek our services in order to “help restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities” ("," 2015, para. 2) are under medication regimen to control the symptoms of their ailment or treat their underlying disease.
