Driverless car has become a reality thanks to the development of artificial intelligence. Indeed, self-driving cars are being tested by automobile market leaders such as Uber, Volkswagen, and Tesla and are predicted to be introduced to the market in the foreseeable future (Sage, 2018).
The first appearance of self-driving cars dated back to 1925 when Francis Houdina ran a trial on an autonomous drive through Manhattan (Edelstein & Dormehl, 2018). From the late 1990s to early 2000s, self-driving cars were mentioned several times in science projects and researches. In 2009, Google made an initial move in testing driverless cars in real roads with its Waymo project, and recently, the company announced that its car has driven 2 million miles (Edelstein & Dormehl, 2018). In 2013, Uber, Tesla and other major automobile companies such as General Motors, Ford have entered the market for self-driving

The vehicles are also equipped with GPS, radar, camera, lasers and lidar for assistance (Johnson, 2018). The autonomy is divided into 6 levels with level 0 meaning no automation and level 5 does not require manual controls (Johnson, 2018).
However, due to the recent fatal accident, self-driving car is now a main subject of a controversial debate. The accident took place in Arizona, the United States in March 2018. The autonomous car belonged to Uber and the victim was a woman who was walking when the car crashed. She later died in the hospital (Levin & Wong, 2018). After the accident, Uber discontinued the trial of autonomous cars in Pheonix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.
In general, self-driving car seems to be a potential market for automobile companies. However, the recent accident has proven that the technology is not yet ready to hit the
The term autonomous refers to the capability of acting independently, or having the freedom to do so. A self-driving car is an autonomous car, which has the ability to sense its environment and navigating without any human operations. These types of cars are built to make safe and smart decisions on the road. In the past years, automobile companies have begun to introduce advanced driver assistance systems that are capable of parking, switching lanes, and braking in case of an emergency on their own, without the driver’s assistance. Automated vehicles are capable of maneuvering through street traffic, as well as other natural and man-made obstacles along the way. Therefore, this technology might completely change the methods of transportation.
I do not understand how a driver, in this case Rafaela Vasquez, did not take control of the vehicle if she was seating behind a wheel and is obviously responsible in my opinion for this tragedy. The “safety driver” did not pay attention to the road as in the video it is showed that she was looking “down and to the side”, even though she said she was “alert” and there is nothing she could have done to avoid the accident. “It was believed that this is the first pedestrian death associated with self-driving technology”. The company has stopped the testing in different cities, unfortunately, technologies advances sometimes brings human casualties to the mix. Self-driving cars should regulate better the “safety drivers” maybe she was looking at her phone instead to pay attention to the
Major incumbent companies expect that the autonomous driving systems will be ready for the market in five years. This may be optimistic, but by 2050, cars that drive themselves could well be major production units for companies like General Motors. GM first revealed in 2010 that it had been working on self-driving cars[1]. Last year, GM demonstrated that the prototypes can follow the pace of traffic, while allowing the driver to have his hands off the steering wheel.
According to MakeUseOf (2015), Google’s 7 self-driving cars of Toyota Prius hybrids hit the roadways in 2010, led by Sebastian Thrum. Since hitting the road Google’s cars have over 1.5 million miles under their belt. These cars use data from Google Street View, data from cameras, LIDAR, and radar to place the car’s position on a map. This system has proven to work very well and seems to be the closest thing to a safe, functioning, self-driving car. Google believes that self-driving cars will increase safety, reduce traffic, and be better on the
Driverless vehicles, otherwise known as autonomous, automated or driverless cars, are no longer science fiction. The technology is here, and several companies are already testing them on the roads. A Total of forty-four corporations are working on autonomous vehicles, ranging from automotive industry stalwarts to leading technology brands and telecommunications companies. In this venture, Tesla Motors and Alphabet seem to be leading the way in the automotive industry with their recent releases of partially-autonomous vehicles. Despite early setbacks including the accidental death of Josh Brown, a forty year old Hollywood star, who was using the autopilot system in the Tesla Model when he crashed the vehicle, or Uber briefly suspending its own program after a self-driving car crashed in Tempe, Arizona, and the public’s outcry on the reliability of driverless cars, private companies working in auto tech are attracting record
"But both man and technology would not have noticed the truck in a short moment. He said it was a comfort for the family that his death contributed to making technology safer for other drivers. In addition, to another incident in China, an accident in Germany in September 2016 also involved a slightly injured person where a Tesla Model S driving in autopilot mode hit a coach. Many manufacturers are relying on autonomous driving for the future. The success of the new technology is likely to depend primarily on its
Imagine being the only human controlled car on the road surrounded by heartless, autonomous, automobiles, scary right? Autonomous, or self driving, cars are on the rise, but they may be more dangerous than initially thought. One hundred percent of cars on the road as of right now are human driven (Peterson, 38). A sudden addition of autonomous cars could seriously harm the safety of our roads. Due to factors such as, lack of human reasoning, human-autonomous driver interaction, and complications with legal affairs and insurance, it is not reasonable to implement self driving cars into traffic as it could put many drivers, passengers, and civilians, at risk despite safety measures taken by automotive manufacturers.
With the new technology for these cars you won’t need insurance. It cost a lot to not only buy a car but also for insurance, but with self driving cars you won’t need insurance. The article states, “A good insurance plan could might pay for all the damage caused by an accident, but it could also cost hundreds of dollars.” Some say that that sense the car is run by a computer that it might glitch bc as we all know computers glitch. They say that when that happens we don’t know who to blame for the accident.
In July 12, The New York Times reported a news: “Inside the self-driving Tesla fatal accident”, which again caused enormous debates on whether self-driving cars should be legal or not.
Finally, if an accident were to occur involving a self-driving car, the question of “who is responsible” is raised. This is a difficult question that needs to be addressed with laws that govern liability in these situations.
Today’s cars can already come with several self driving features. Automated features in cars are becoming quite normal, some of which features include automatic opening trunk with sensoring technology, lane centering, self parking, and blind spot detection. The technology enables a car to be safer because the car can “see” it’s surroundings (Shelley, 2013). These features have been installed in cars for about a decade now and the costs of the features are decreasing every year. Self driving cars are circulating all over the world, Tesla for example has been on the rise in 2017 because they have become more affordable.
Self-driving cars are the wave of the future. There is much debate regarding the impact a self-driving car will have on our society and economy. Some experts believe fully autonomous vehicles will be on the road in the next 5-10 years (Anderson). This means a vehicle will be able to drive on the road without a driver or any passengers. Like any groundbreaking technology, there is a fear of the unforeseen problems. Therefore, there will need to be extensive testing before anyone can feel safe with a vehicle of this style on the road. It will also take time for this type of technology to become financially accessible to the masses, but again alike any technology with time it should be possible. Once the safety concern has been fully addressed
Google has successfully built a self-driving car, yet “Google insists on developing a car without a steering wheel partly because it contends that people often don’t pay attention while their cars are operating autonomously” (Vock 37). Even though autonomous vehicles drive themselves, passengers are still able to manually control certain features of the car. For example, the person in the vehicle “can manually control the car to go a little bit faster than the car might on its own” (Swant). Google has put much consideration on how the car drives and handles interactions at traffic signals and signs. For example, “Google has begun programming its fleet of self-driving cars to inch forward at for way stops” to make sure there are no cars before proceeding (qtd. In “Making Robot Cars More Human 1). When there are multiple cars traveling together, “computer control enables cars to drive behind one another, so they travel as a virtual unit (Fisher 60). The autonomous Google Car has proven to successfully drive on the roads with other vehicles, but the technology that is in the car is more complicated than it
Self-driving cars should not be on the road because they come with many dangerous factors, disadvantages, and with all these dangers and disadvantages, they may not be as great as they are brought up to be. There are dangerous factors that come with having a computer control a car rather
Technology is evolving faster than ever these days, however there is one technology that could revolutionize the transportation industry. This technology is called autonomous cars, also known as self-driving cars. Autonomous cars can be defined as a vehicle that is capable of sensing its environment, and navigating without human input. Using different techniques such as GPS and radar, autonomous cars can detect surroundings, thus removing the human element in driving. This would have a positive effect in more ways than we could ever imagine. Research suggests that self-driving cars will become more abundant in the future because they will be more cost-effective, enhance safety, and decrease traffic congestion.
