In this year of 2015, many people think racism is non existent. The President Barack Obama is black. There are black musicians such as, Beyonce and Jay Z dominating the charts. Some may even say there is no reason for The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Times have changed in many ways however, the presumption that racism ended is completely wrong. The presumption that America is an equal and accepting country is false. In American history, there have been triumphs against inequality. With these triumphs the country has gone into a slumber. The thought of change is the thought of ignorance.

In the 1800s America hated blacks. Anything was done to subdue their rights. The Dred Scott case in 1857 was a big one regarding slavery. Dred Scott was a slave when his owner took him to a slavery free territory. When Scott’s owner died all of the owner’s property was inherited by a woman. This woman became owner of Scott. Dred Scott then sued for his freedom. In March 1857, the Supreme Court decided that all Blacks were not and can never become U.S. Citizens. Also, that slaves were property and therefore cannot sue. The Supreme Court also made slavery legal all over the United States, even in free territories. After the Dred Scott ruling the Republican Party opposed this decision. …show more content…

The 14th amendment guarantees everyone equal protection under the law. No matter what race, color, or creed. Soon after, the amendment began to be violated. The amendment was manipulated by segregation. Segregation is the separation of people by race. Segregation was turned into a form of laws, named Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws took America by storm, train cars, public schools, and restaurants became segregated. Segregation was on the minds of many blacks. It was unfair and another way to suppress blacks.
