In Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein: Or, the Modern Prometheus, the character Dr. Victor Frankenstein creates a living creature out of inanimate body parts. Frankenstein pursues this experiment for over two years to accomplish a major scientific discovery. He does have doubts about continuing his experiment as well as experiencing hesitation. However, he finally decides to go on with the experiment, also deciding that scientific discovery and the need for achievement is more important than any doubts about conducting an “immoral” experiment. When Frankenstein finally finishes his experiment, he is more than thrilled. He finally succeeded an experiment he once thought was impossible. When he finally did, he was more than enthusiastic, at first. His enthusiasm faded quickly when he took a long look at the creature that was lying on his table, breathing. He realized what he did and he knew that he made a mistake. His regret quickly took over his body as well as guilt and fear. The story states, “How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom, with such infinite pains and care I had endeavored to form?” (pg. 42). Frankenstein realizes that his experiment is a “catastrophe.” The remorse that he is feeling is already starting to swell inside of his body. Some people believe that Frankenstein in fact realizes that the experiment he did was good, and that he will live happily with the thought of creating a creature that he will create more. In the story, it says, “A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me.” (pg. 36). From this quote, some believe that Frankenstein turns a new leaf and realizes that creating life wasn’t a bad thing, but in fact something good.
