Friendship is the greatest gift in the world between two people. It is a bond in which two people accept each other for whatever they are, positives and negatives. In the novel, ‘Don’t Call me Ishmael’, by Michael Bauer, the power of friendship is shown with James Scobie and Ishmael Leseur. Ishma5el is a 14-year-old new boy at Saint Daniel’s Boys College. Ishmael has low self-esteem, which leads to him calling himself “the mayor of loserville.” (2006, p.4). Ishmael’s problems include a school bully called Barry Bagsley, who delights in mashing his name and generally making his life horrible. Ishmael has to deal with the mean words and trouble Barry does. He tries hard to fit in but is finding it hard to, because his personality is very timid. Barry gets particular enjoyment out of bullying Ishmael, calling him some many mean, but interesting names like, ‘Hey, Le Spewer-’(2006, p. 22). ‘Fishtail Le-sewer’ (2006, p.19) and ‘Fish- whale Le Dick’. Ishmael ends up making new friends by being on the debating team. Sitting in the debating team and speaking builds his confidence. Gradually as his confidence increases, Ishmael is able to face his fears and speak in front of an audience. At the end of the school year, Ishmael finally had the courage to talk in front of the whole school at assembly. He was asked to write a poem and he did not hesitate. James Scobie has changed Ishmael’s whole personality putting him on the debating team. He has built confidence, which completely changes
