Identity. What is identity? Many will say that it is the distinct personality of an individual. Others will say that identity is the behavior of a person in response to their surrounding environment. But according to Webster's dictionary, identity is who we are what we are. Many people always wonder who they are and what they are in the world for. To answer this question, they go on a hunt. Family influences religion hugely. The religion the family praises or believes in impacts how children view their own religion and other religions. For example family may force you to go to church but you realize that what the priest is saying really gives no sense or meaning into your believes. This of course has a negative impact towards your view on religion. Friends with or without religious beliefs can influence others into believing a similar view. Whether they want to impress or they respect a person that may influence spiritual beliefs. Media's portrayal of religions can impact strongly onto a person's beliefs as the media is a strong influence and can frame or shape certain perceptions. For example if a show is on such as Ellen and she promotes Buddhism for example, then those who are a big fan of a Ellen may shift their beliefs towards Buddhism. In the article , “ Religious Identity and Family Ideologies,” it states, “ Evangelical Protestants are expected to be more opposed to premarital sexual activity, non marital cohabitation, abortion, divorce, and feminism,”. This states that those who are from the Evangelical group are tend to have different views on what another religion might believe. Most of us aren’t against blacks, whites, or Hispanics but we are actually against other religions and nationalities. Christianity, Catholicism, and Islam have caused many wars and conflicts. Identity, an ambiguous idea, plays an important part in today’s world. To me identity can be defined as who a person is or what differentiates one person from another. Identity would be a person’s name, age, height, ethnicity, personality, and more. A quote by Anne Sexton states “It doesn't matter who my father was; it matters who I remember he was”(Anne Sexton). This quote helps me define identity because I believe it is saying that identity is what people are remembered by. When some people think of identity, words such as, uniqueness, distinctiveness, or individuality may come to mind. However, I disagree with this because when I think of identity I think of mimicry, self-consciousness, or opinions.

In Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum’s piece, “The Complexity of Identity: ‘Who Am I?’, Tatum asserts that identity is formed by “individual characteristics, family dynamics, historical factors, and social and political contexts” (Tatum 105). They have always done special things such as taking me on trips to show me how much they love me. My sister has also helped me be the person I am today. She has been a role model to me in many things. She has encouraged me to do well in school because she excelled and was valedictorian of her class. She also has an outgoing personality and has been a role model socially.
