In the documentary, “Not Just a Paycheck” it examines the social determinants of health due to unemployment rates. Specifically, in the United there is a strong correlation between the two. The main cause of deteriorating health and unemployment is the impact of stress on the body and how it can lead to many more health complications.
Naturally, when an individual is removed or relocated to a situation or condition that they are not used to, it is bound to bring up high-stress levels. Stress levels, in the long run, is a platform of not only opportunistic diseases but also some new bad character traits that can be so harmful to the human body health wise. For instance, the immediate closure and relocation of the Electrolux Corporation from the United States to Mexico back 2006, in search of better labor prices, it totally affected over 2000 workers in Greenville, Michigan who were dependent on the company. It is important to note that these laid off workers were able to live comfortably, i.e., taking care of their families, being able to afford a vacation and so forth, before the relocation to Juarez. When these stress hormones are around long term, it can increase the likelihood of getting a stroke, heart and kidney disease since they are overworked in the body. In fact, it is the leading cause to diabetes, atherosclerosis, and heart disease. Furthermore, in the documentary, the laid off workers life go miserable due to the increment of bills and no assurance of a brighter tomorrow, many organs in the body are strained due to the high-stress levels, and eventually, these organs will wear out - increasing health risks.
