The scriptures are filled with many valuable teachings. Each time reading through passages can result in different interpretations depending on your situation at that time. After reading through the first half of the Doctrine and Covenants again I have discovered new insights and gospel principles that specifically apply to me now. The principles that were addressed and tie into my personal journals include; the role of the prophet, the importance of temples, and the blessing of eternal families. Temples have always been an important concept in religion since biblical times. In 1832 the Lord revealed that a temple needed to be built in the U.S. D&C 84:3-5 says, “…For verily this generation shall not all pass away until an house shall be built unto the Lord…” Since then temples have been a huge focus, especially in these latter days. The prophet is vital to the previous principles listed, and is also what makes this church unique from other religions. In D&C 21:4-5 we are taught that the prophet’s words are the Lord’s words, and we should “heed all of his words”. The prophet guides the church, counsels with the Lord and members, provides wisdom, and above all loves every person. Even though he is still human he is probably the closest person on this earth to resemble Christ. In General Conference just one of the roles of the prophet is seen; his role of giving wisdom and counsel. In fact, “general conference becomes, in a sense, a supplement to or an extension of the Doctrine and Covenants." (Chp 6, Teachings of the Living Prophets). After learning and understanding more about the role of the prophets I can appreciate why obedience is important to our salvation. I have always loved general conference, and hearing from the apostles and prophets. However, after studying this topic I am committing myself to be more alert during general conference and to study the words after it is
