Too many have died due to distracted driving accidents. Whether talking, messing with the radio, or texting, distracted driving can cause serious life threatening accidents. Many of the victims are teenagers. I believe one main reason for that is teens do not fully understand the consequences of their dangerous behavior. I believe PSAs can help reduce the number of distracted driving incidents because it shows distracted drivers the consequences of their habit. They also have personal anecdotes from those affected by distracted driving incidents. People may say that distracted drivers know that what they are doing is dangerous. However, PSAs put the distracted driver in the place of people who have been in accidents, as well as their families.
Tim McGraw’s “Highway Don’t Care” is an unorthodox approach to educating the public about the dangers of distracted driving as opposed to the traditional classes or public service announcements. Lives are put at risk every time a distracted motorist is on the road, and deaths have increased by a substantial amount in the last ten years. On Thursday, April 26th, 2014 one woman’s bad judgement cost her life (Hastings, 1). Not only was she effected, but her friends and family assuredly felt a pain in their hearts. In the few seconds it took Courtney Ann Sanford to post a few words on Facebook, it was enough to distract her from the road and to drive across another lane and through a median straight into a Truck (Hastings, 1). There are approximately 5,400 deaths per year that are linked to distracted driving, and thousands more were injured. (U.S. Department of Labor). Those fatalities are our neighbors, close friends, and even family. How can we prevent this from being so prominent? How can we make the roads a safe place to be again? These questions have many different answers, but many prove to be un-effective. I believe that the best and only way to resolve this issue is to implement tougher laws on cell-phone use in vehicles, and educate our youth to the best of our abilities on the dangers of distracted driving.

Traffic accidents account for over twenty thousand deaths each year and more than ten times as many injuries. There are a number of factors that contribute to these types of collisions, however, new and evolving laws can account for a large portion of successful preventable measures. In order for laws to be changed or added for the purpose of safer roads and highways, lawmakers have to first look at what factors contribute to such unsafe conditions. This statistic shows how dangerous using the phone or even texting is while driving. As technology has increased, so has the use of cellphone. Driving is a new skill for teens, so doing multiple things simultaneously takes more effort for them than for more experienced drivers. Texting and driving can ruin families because when texting and driving there is a higher chance of getting in a crash. There are only 2 percent of people who can actually multitask successfully. this PSA give intel from a real person that was fortunate enough to survive a drunk driving accident. The speaker in the video is a T4 paraplegic, which means he is paralyzed from the nipples down which unfortunately means he can not reproduce. Out all three PSAs this video is the most effective because it shows that if you are able to survive a drunk driving accident you are most likely to become a paraplegic. I think the least effective drunk driving PSA was the first PSA because although it’s very straightforward, it is not giving the targeted audience a full explanation on how to stop from drinking and driving. The video simply indicates that if you have been drinking and decide to get behind the wheel you are putting yourself and passengers at risk of either dying or living with permanent damage to the body. Although I favor the third PSA or the first PSA, both serve as a great way to bring light to the world to how serious drunk driving is. I believe Public Service Announcements (PSA) can not help reduce the number of distracted driving incidents. 82% of American teens ages 16 to 17 own a cell phone. 52% said they have talked on the phone while driving. 32% have texted behind the wheel. 80% of crashes are caused by people texting or calling on their phones. “It seems so common sense not to text while driving, but people are so connected to their electronic devices that they kind of forget themselves.” It takes less then three seconds of not paying attention to cause an accident and one second to stop it. No matter what Public Service Announcements say they can not stop stupidity, people will always do what they want and until they realize that themselves these incidents will never stop.
