Growing up I had never cared for the field trips our school would take to the art museums of San Antonio. Specifically, I remember how unimpressed I was at the McNay. I’d stare at the massive sculptures resting outside in the garden and wonder why anyone would consider that red, twirly thing or the board filled with dirty, old shoes pieces of work. It didn’t make sense to me – until now. After taking this class, I decided to take a run down to the McNay to see if my opinion had changed any after learning what I have in this class. It wasn’t just the house itself that amazed me but the art itself as well. I saw it in a completely different light this time. For one thing, I can focus on my other classes a bit better. A lot of times I will study for hours and hours and after a while my brain shuts down without permission and refuses to take in any more information about natural selection or feeding adaptations of finches. Instead of forcing my brain to start working again I’ll go back to what my teacher and I used to do. I’ll grab some paper, close my eyes, draw a random shape, and then create something. By the time my hands are beginning to wane my brain decides that it’s ready for more learning.
I know a lot of students who have trouble focusing on their work. It’s usually because their majors require difficult classes like chemistry and psychology. What’s worse is that my peers decide to take these classes all at the same time. You can see the gray hairs sprouting out by the peak of the semester.
It is my firm belief that everyone did a doodle a day or colored a picture or something they would be able to manage their stress better. As a result, their grades and their mood might improve. They won’t be gouging their eyes out with their pencils any longer because they will now have an outlet for their anxiety. To start, I am going to post a picture each day to my Instagram and invite everyone to join in and take a few minutes out of their day to draw or color and post it to their accounts. It’ll stir some creativity and allow their tired minds to rewind and juice
