General Disposition

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea were admitted into the UN General

Assembly in 1991 after the passing resolution 46/1. The Democratic People’s Republic of

Korea is the northern division of the Korean peninsula, and is recognized as an legitimate

sovereignty by all members of UN, except Japan and South Korea. North Korea’s foreign

policies and ideals stem from their totalitarian government and their continuous conflicts

with South Korea. North Korea’s division began after Japan’s defeat in World War II,

prior to World War II; the entire Korean peninsula was a colony of Japan. However after

Japan’s defeat in World War II, the Korean peninsula was divided so that the northern

sector was under Soviet occupation, while the southern sector was occupied by the

United States. The differing ideals instilled in the two sectors by their “mother countries”

and growing political tension eventually led to the Korean War, and the formation of two

independent government. Today it is controlled almost primarily by the chairman and

viewed by many as a dictatorship.

Since North Korea is a totalitarian state under the rule of mostly one man its

foreign policies are unpredictable and often times extreme. North Korea currently has

diplomatic relations with 165 states, including China, Russia and the European Union.

However despite this, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s government retains

isolation from most countries. North Korea has almost no trade relations with any country

and primarily only trades with the People’s Republic of China. In 2009 it was reported

that half of North Korean imports were from the PRC. The North Korean government

their anti-western policies and ideals. North Korean’s stance on the stability of Middle

East, would be anti-western and anti-Israel. North Korea would not want any western

intervention in the removal of current Middle Eastern governments and nor would they

want countries to intervene because of chemical weapons. Also North Korea wants to

limit US and other European nations from aiding Israel, and would back up Palestinian

efforts against Israel.

Currently North Korea main goal in the Middle East is to limit US influence, thus

they ally most middle eastern countries who oppose US affiliated Country, i.e. Iraq and

Israel. Any resolution that would forbid US intervention in the Middle East will be

backed up by North Korea.
