Recommended: Oppression of native americans

Nearly 1 in 4 American Natives are in poverty, and only about 26% of them have professional careers, opposed to 40% of Caucasians (MinorityHealth.gov).Native American racism is the longest prejudice of a group in the history of America (Racism Against Native Americans).Have you ever seen a Native Americans public speaker speak of anything other than the prejudice against their people ("We Need To Stop ‘Playing Cowboys and Indians’ With Native Americans"). Even so, many of us have a preconceived notion of Native Americans thanks to movies like “Pocahontas” ("We Need to Stop ‘Playing Cowboys and Indians’ With Native Americans"). I am going to give you a look into the discrimination of Native Americans. Racism against Native Americans is the longest discrimination in the United States, dating back to Christopher Columbus ("Racism against Native Americans"). When Christopher Columbus landed on the coast of America, the men he brought with him were not looking for peace (Delema). The men were looking for gold and they turned the Indians into slaves to mine the gold mines that they had made (Delema). Later, while America was expanding west, the Americans moving into Texas had different rules than the government (Delema). They wouldn’t trade land with the Indians and they forced them to move away to other parts of the country (Delema). They even went to as much as to sell the Indians land to others while the Indians were inhibiting it (Delema). And even after that General Howard was moving them to a reservation when the Nez Perce tribe tried to escape to Montana, where General Howard then gave Colonel John Gibbon the order to wipe the tribe out, ditching the effort to attempt to relocate them (Delema).     Native Americans have been living on American soil for quite a while now. They were here before the European colonists. They have been here and still continue to be present in the United States. However, the way the media represents Native Americans disallows the truth about Native Americans to be told. Only misinterpretations of Native Americans seem to prosper in the media. It appears the caricature of Native Americans remains the same as first seen from the first settler’s eyes: savage-like people. Their culture and identity has become marginalized by popular culture. This is most evident in mainstream media. There exists a dearth of Native American presence in the mainstream media. There is a lack of Native American characters in different media mediums. When they are represented, they are misrepresented. They are easily one of the most underrepresented cultures and people in American media. Native Americans shouldn’t be confined to a stereotype, should have a greater presence in the media, and shouldn’t be misrepresented when they are presented.

    European settlers have a long history of mistreating Native Americans. The most famous example is the Trail of Tears in which President Van Buren and the federal government forcibly and violently removed Cherokee Indians in 1838 from their native land. Over 18 thousand Cherokee women, men and children were forced to walk 1,000 miles from Georgia to Oklahoma. Of these people, 4,000 died from harsh weather, starvation and exposure to illnesses. European settlers during this time viewed Native Americans as uncivilized savage and used this perception to justify violently removing the Native Americans from their land. Native Americans initially accepted the European settlements but pleaded against being removed. The status of African-Americans in this time has generated debate among historians but there is enough evidence to show they were perceived similar to Native Americans; as not equal to European settlers. European settlers justified this by denying their natural rights. African-Americans, however, were seen as useful resources and they remained on their land and were used as slaves. In return African-Americans responded by attempting to escape to their freedom.
