Addictive: Refined sugar can be very addictive. When you eat refined sugar, it can cause a huge release of dopamine (a brain chemical that helps us feel happiness or pleasure) in the reward centre of the brain. Nutrient-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables may not contain, or cause the brain to release, large amounts of dopamine. It is also important to understand that the “happy feeling” you get from eating refined sugar can override the “I’ve had enough to eat” mechanism from other digestive hormones. This means that you can be at greater risk of eating more than what your body actually needs. Liver: The liver stores excess sugar as glycogen (storage friendly version of glucose). If you eat refined sugar daily (above the natural sugar …show more content…

Biochemically they are identical. Fructose: It is the principal sugar in fruit. In fruit, it raises no issues because it is accompanied by nutrients and fiber. Sucrose: It is table sugar. It is a double sugar, containing one part each of glucose (50%) and fructose (50%), chemically bound together. Enzymes in the intestine quickly and efficiently split sucrose into glucose and fructose, which are absorbed into the body as single sugars. Galactose: It is a sugar found in milk and milk products. The small intestine—the organ where most food digestion and nutrient absorption take place—produces an enzyme called lactase. Lactase breaks down lactose into two simpler forms of sugar: glucose and galactose. The body then absorbs these simpler sugars into the bloodstream. Glycogenesis The process of glycogenesis, or anabolism, changes the glucose in your liver and muscles into glycogen. Your liver and muscles then store the glycogen. When your blood glucose levels are low, your body secretes the glucagon hormones. Your body secretes the glucagon hormones to stimulate the conversion of glycogen into glucose, a process called glycogenolysis, or catabolism. Your body can then use the glucose as a source of energy. At the same time, this restarts the sugar metabolism process and your body once again stores excess glucose as adenosine
