We are fortunate to have recovered many ancient artworks that give us a glance into the everyday lives of ancient civilizations. It’s hardly believable that two works of art from different regions and time periods would have anything in common. While the “Virgin and Child” and “Dionysus and Pan” sculptures have different artistic styles, as “Virgin and Child” is in the mannered style of the late gothic era, while “Dionysus and Pan” sculpture is influenced by Greek art with elements of Roman verism, they are also similar as they both show intimate and loving interactions between the subjects and share similar composition.

Both sculptures include two figures, sharing intimate moments in time. The subjects are interacting with each other in a loving, tender way. The virgin holds her child at her waist, head tilted, and locking eyes with her small son as looks into her face lovingly. Dionysus has his arm around Pan looking down into the mythical creatures eyes. One figure is larger in scale than the other, and are balanced asymmetrically. Both sculptures are made up of smooth, organic lines and the subjects are proportional and realistic. Dionysus is portrayed in perfect form, muscular, lean and youthful. His hair is adorned with a wreath of grapes and vines, and he carries a staff decorated with ribbons and a pine cone. He appears radiant, strong and relaxed. His loyal follower, Pan is also represented. I think the artist included Pan in the piece to show just how much Dionysus is loved and worshipped, and that is why Pan is gazing at him with such intensity. Elite Romans loved to decorate their homes as they wanted to showcase their wealth, taste, and education to visitors. It is possible this sculpture was used as decoration in the home of a wealthy
