There are many versions of Sleeping Beauty that we looked at. The first version that we read was the Giambattista Basile story. The story was called Sun, Moon, and Talia, and this version was very different from the others. The story takes place at a country mansion located somewhere in the woods. The major characters in the story include Talia, Sun, Moon, the King, and the Queen. It starts off with a great lord who was blessed with a birth of a daughter, and he named her Talia. The third Sleeping Beauty story was written by the Grimm Brothers, and they called it Little Brier-Rose. It takes place in a large castle. Main characters are the King, Queen, Prince, and Briar-Rose. At the beginning of the story, a King and Queen had no children. One day while the Queen was sitting in the bathtub, a crab krept out of the water and told the Queen “You will soon get your wish, and you will bring a daughter into the world. The wish did come true a couple day’s later. The King and Queen were so happy, they decided to have a celebration. The King invited some fairies from his kingdom. He invited 13 fairies to the party, but he never realized he only had 12 plates. When the 13th fairies came to the celebration, she started to become unhappy. So she cursed the King’s daughter and said that when the King’s daughter turned 15, she would prick her finger on a spindle and die. The King and Queen started to become very upset with the wish. The story started off with the King and Queen have a celebration for the birth of Aurora. They invite 3 fairies, and each fairy gives Aurora a wish. All of the sudden, Maleficent the witch appears at the party. She is not very happy since she was not invited. Maleficent curses Aurora and say’s that one day she will prick her finger on a spindle and die when she turns 16. On Aurora’s 16th birthday, the 3 fairies bring her out to a cottage in the woods to keep her safe from Maleficent. Aurora is lead into a door that brings her to a spinning spindle. The next morning, as he leaves the castle he breaks a rose of its stem and the Beast appears. Beast is angry with this intruder's thanklessness and tells the man that he will spare the man's life if he returns in a month to give him one of the daughters. The man returns home and tells the whole family of the enchanted castle and the promise made to the Beast. Beauty steps up as the daughter that will give up her freedom for her father. When the month is up, Beauty enters the castle to await her fate.
Shrek has taken the role of combining Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty’s storyline and parts of the plot into the some of the main focuses of Shrek. The greater standout parts of the stories were picked out and used, but changed so that it was not copied exactly, but are still sure-enough similar. A number of people do not pick up on the similarities that have been interchanged within, such as in Sleeping Beauty. Although, after doing researching it makes, it easier s to pick up on parts of the story that were not easily recognized before. Beauty, who is the princess in Sleeping Beauty, was put under a sleeping spell and locked in a castle; Fiona too was locked in a castle where she was put under a spell. The spells, however, were different, but the idea remains the same. Tiffin also mentions the “dragon-slaying quest” (Tiffin ln 19) that takes place in Sleeping Beauty, Shrek and Donkey also have no choice but to deal with the dragon that is guarding Fiona in the castle. Fiona too is a princess just like in countless versions of Sleeping Beauty, such as the Grimm brother’s, Little Brier Rose. While Catherine Breillat’s “Sleeping Beauty” does stay true to the original Brother’s Grimm tale in its archetype, she does stray from the original version in many ways in order to convey a message. In comparison to her film “Bluebeard”, “Sleeping Beauty” was much more explicit, with graphic sexual scenes. Additionally, this tale is different in that the main character is not the dainty frail princess we usually see in classic fairytales, but a tomboy who wants to referred to as “Vladmir” and has sexual encounters with another woman. Breillat contrasts the lesbian sex scene where Anastasia is laughing and enjoying herself with her having sex with Peter where she cries throughout it and puts her face down in a pillow after it is done.
When most people think of the movie, "Cinderella';, they think of the animated Disney version with the little mice and the happy ending where Cinderella marries the prince and they live happily ever after. While the movie "Ever After'; is based on "Cinderella';, it is not animated, but still has many of the same characteristics as the Disney version. Of course it is not exactly the same, and since it is not animated there are many differences.
Over centuries of children have been enjoying the classic fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers and Charles Perrault. The fanciful plots and the vivid details allow children to be entranced by characters and adventures that can only be found in these stories. One of the most beloved fairy tales, which both the Perrault and the Grimms have their own separate versions of, is Cinderella. Cinderella is able to show how both versions are able to feed off the same plots while personifying the century and social economic situation in which they have lived.
The version in the United States is known as Cinderella. Cinderella's mother dies when she is young and her father remarries. The woman he gets married to has two daughters. They become Cinderella´s new evil stepsisters. Her sisters are jealous because she is very pretty and petite. They treat her very poorly. She is to do chores around the house and attend to every need of her stepmother and stepsisters. The Prince is having a ball and requests that every available lady in the kingdom attends. Cinderella is told by her stepmother that she can not attend the ball unless she finishes her chores. She finishes her chores and
She feels she needs to get revenge on Stefan for leaving her alone. So she could be thought out as an evil villain, but there is more. She heard about King Stefan’s new baby from her “wings”, also being a crow she saved from a farmer killing. Maleficent thought this was the right time to seek her revenge, so she went to the palace and placed a curse on baby princess Aurora, “The princess will indeed grow in grace and beauty, and beloved by all who meet her. But before the sunsets on her sixteenth birthday she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall into a sleep almost like death, a sleep from which she will never awaken...etc The princess can be awoken from her death sleep, but only by true love’s kiss…” Maleficent realizes that true love’s kiss doesn’t exist so she planned it all out as a mischievous proposal… or so she thought.
After World War II Disney came out with a few more feature animated movies such as: Cinderalla, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty. One thing that Snow White, Cinderalla, and Sleeping Beauty all have in common is that they are all stories about princesses who live happily ever after with their prince.
Over the years, Snow White’s story has been told in numerous different versions then its original version in 1812 by the Grimm Brothers. The main basis of the story has remained the same. Only a few minor tweaks to the story have changed. The three versions of the story that are going to be analyzed are the original story “Little Snow White” by the Brothers Grimm, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” by Disney, and “Mirror, Mirror” by Disney also. They each were created in very different times and the original story has changed over the years to appeal to the audience of that time. No matter how many versions there are Snow White is considered, one of the most cherished fairy tales of all time. They each use different methods to get their story across by using different colors, word usage, and scenes.
Even though fairy tales don’t always end the way we want them to, we usually expect them to end with prince charming saving a princess. However, according to the Grimms Brothers version, “The Frog King,” the princess actually saves the prince. An innocent naive princess comes across a frog that once was a prince. Therefore, the only way he can overcome this curse is to ask a princess to fully have her assurance into becoming his companion. The moral of this fairy tale is express how appearances are deceiving. We don’t fully have an understanding what true beauty looks like until it is standing in front of us. The three main symbols that emphasize the true beauty in this fairytale is the frog, the fountain, and the golden ball.
Walt Disney’s Cinderella is adapted from the original fairy tale written in 1697 by Charles Perrault. There are some key differences between Walt Disney’s Cinderella and Charles Perrault’s Cinderella. In Charles Perrault’s tale, Cinderella’s father is not dead, but the father is controlled by the stepmother. Cinderella’s younger stepsister is much more polite than the older stepsister, who calls Cinderella Cinderwench. The king in Perrault’s tale hosts a two day Ball, which Cinderella attends with the help of the fairy godmother. During Cinderella’s preparation for the first night of the Ball, Cinderella helps the fairy godmother find a coachman when the fairy godmother could not find one. Cinderella’s glass slipper comes off on the second night of the ball. Similar to Walt Disney’s Cinderella, the prince in Perrault’s story announces to marry a woman whose foot will fit in the glass slipper. Unlike the Walt Disney’s tale, Cinderella is not locked up in the attic and the stepmother does not physically attempt to stop Cinderella from trying the slipper. Instead, the step sisters ridicule Cinderella when Cinderella suggests trying on the glass slipper. Cinderella wears the slipper and takes out the other slipper from a pocket which Cinderella puts on the other foot. Suddenly, the fairy godmother appears and transforms Cinderella’s ragged outfit to a magnificent gown. After the transformation, the step sisters recognize Cinderella as the unknown beautiful princess who attended the Ball and beg for forgiveness. Cinderella forgives the step sisters and marries the step sisters to the great lords of the castle. The prince marries Cinderella, however, Perrault does not mention about the prince and Cinderella living happily ever after.
It tells the story of Princess Aurora, King Florestan's daughter. The fairies have been invited to Aurora's christening, and each one in turn dances and gives a magic present. However, the wicked fairy, Carabosse, interrupts the ceremony and is furious that she wasn't invited. She announces that one day Aurora will prick her finger on a spindle and die. Everyone is horrified, but the Lilac fairy still has her present to give. She modifies the spell so Aurora will not die, but will fall asleep and be woken only by a prince's kiss. At her 16th birthday party, princess Aurora pricks her finger on a spindle brought by Carabosse in disguise and, with the whole court, falls asleep for 100 years. Prince Florimund, with the help of the Lilac fairy. Makes his way through the enchanted forest to awaken Aurora with a kiss. At Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund's wedding, the fairies dance and celebrate with Puss in Boots and Red Riding Hood.
Fairytales, the short stories that most children heard as they went to bed, are actually folktales from previous decades. The fairytales today are primarily adaptations of older versions recreated by Disney— the pioneers of this generation. With that said, the modern versions consistently display good triumphing over evil, a prince charming that constantly came to the rescue, and a happily ever after ending. However, the original folktale version didn’t always come with fortunate events, but often were more violent and gruesome. With the fairytale Cinderella, Disney maintains a similar theme as its Grimm version; however, the conflicts, events, and characters that support this idea are rather different.
Each person in the world has heard of Cinderella, no matter what kind of version it may be. Cinderella is the one fairy tale story that has been popular and will always be the one tale that has to be told to children. Words and story lines might be twist and turn, but in the end the knowledge of the story will be learned in similar ways. As we all know when one story is told another is created, when one is at its best then another is at its worse. One version will always be better than another, but no matter what version it might be the story will be told.
