Shrek too numberless is just a funny good-hearted kid’s movie, that almost any child has seen. Shrek is not like numerous of the traditional fairy tales that people learn about as a child. Shrek did not date back to centuries ago, it was not told orally, then someone wrote it down, and it has not been rewritten in many countries and changed due to different cultures. While Shrek is a unique modern tale about Ogres, talking animals, magic and more surprises it is also a spoof and audience should recognize common characters. Shrek has taken the role of combining Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty’s storyline and parts of the plot into the some of the main focuses of Shrek. The greater standout parts of the stories were picked out and used, but changed so that it was not copied exactly, but are still sure-enough similar. A number of people do not pick up on the similarities that have been interchanged within, such as in Sleeping Beauty. Although, after doing researching it makes, it easier s to pick up on parts of the story that were not easily recognized before. Beauty, who is the princess in Sleeping Beauty, was put under a sleeping spell and locked in a castle; Fiona too was locked in a castle where she was put under a spell. The spells, however, were different, but the idea remains the same. Tiffin also mentions the “dragon-slaying quest” (Tiffin ln 19) that takes place in Sleeping Beauty, Shrek and Donkey also have no choice but to deal with the dragon that is guarding Fiona in the castle. Fiona too is a princess just like in countless versions of Sleeping Beauty, such as the Grimm brother’s, Little Brier Rose. The fairy tale creatures are seen in the movie when, they are up for sale, when they are in Shrek’s swamp and all together again at the end of the story. “Various references to figures from both fairy tale and children’s nursery rhyme—pigs, wolves, Snow White, Robin Hood, the Gingerbread Man, and the Three Blind Mice. (Tiffin ln 23-25). These are the characters that many would go ahead and pick up on. There are also scenes throughout the movie, however, that are mixed in and used as if they are supposed to be in there. One scene that stuck out after watching the movie closely, is the scene with Robin Hood and Princess Fiona. Princess Fiona fights off Robin Hood and all the men so they do not capture her. Another well-incorporated scene that is from Snow White is when Lord Farquaad is asking the talking mirror who he should marry. Tiffin briefly mentions the magic mirror, and how it is in Snow White, but does not talk about it as closely as she does the other stories. The mirror he is asking and talks to is the talking mirror forms, Snow White. When Lord Farquaad gets the talking mirror, he even starts out by asking it “mirror, mirror on the wall, is this not a perfect kingdom of them all”. In Snow White, the Evil Queen would ask, “mirror, mirror of them all, who is the fairest of them all?” so in Shrek it mimics what is happening in Snow White, having Lord
Fairy tales connect to our owns lives, dreams, anxieties, and help us to consider what we would do in their shoes. Many cultures have their own spin on common fairy tales like Sleeping Beauty, with their own cultural flavor. We read those versions and know that we share something important and the hope for good to overcome evil.
In the 2001 animated film, Shrek, an ogre by the same name is on a mission to to regain his swamp back after Lord Farquaad begins to use it as a refugee camp for captured fairy tale creatures. Shrek is accompanied by a talking donkey, named Donkey. While on the quest to get his swamp back, he makes a deal with Lord Farquaad to go on another quest: rescuing Princess Fiona. The deal is that if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona for Lord Farquaad, Lord Farquaad will give Shrek the deed to his swamp and remove all of the squatters. Shrek agrees to this deal, and him and Donkey set off to rescue the princess. Shrek finds Princess Fiona and she is unimpressed by Shrek because he isn’t living up to her fantasies of being extremely romantic. The three escape and have a series of adventures together on the way back to Lord Farquaad's Kingdom. Shrek and Fiona fall in love during this time although neither one of them acts on their feelings. There’s a major miscommunication and Fiona almost ends up marrying Lord Farquaad but Shrek stops the wedding, defeats Lord Farquaad and marries Fiona (Adamson & Jenson, 2001).
Fairy tales are one of the longest lasting forms of literature. Though now they bring to mind classic movies engendered by Disney, many of these stories were first passed on in an oral manner, meant to convey a message, moral, or lesson. Alison Lurie’s “What Fairy Tales Tell Us” covers a broad range of classic tales, discussing how under the guise of an entertaining story comes life lessons we would all do well to follow. At first glance, what makes a fairy tale a fairy tale may seem obvious—some kind of magic, hidden symbols, repetition, and of course it’s evident it’s fiction—but fables are more than that. As Arthur Schelesinger puts it, it’s about “[expanding] imagination” and gaining understanding of mysterious places (618). While doing this, it also helps children to escape this world, yet teach a lesson that the reader may not be conscious of. A wonderful story that achieves all of this is Cinderella, but not the traditional tale many American’s have heard. Oochigeaskw, or The Rough-Faced Girl, and Ashputtle would be fitting for a seven-year-old because they get the gears of the mind turning, allowing for an escape on the surface, with an underlying enlightenment for children of the ways of the world.
The original Disney fairytales portray their princesses as beautiful, elegant, and very ladylike. Although this is portrayed in most fairytales, it is not a qualifying factor to determine if a film is a fairytale or not. In my opinion, Shrek The Musical was a great play that brought the childhood fairytale story of Shrek to life on stage. The costumes, props, and backgrounds on the set were well made and it was obvious that much time and effort were put into the play. The story of Shrek was brought to life on Broadway and was very realistic and produced very well.
Every typical fairy tale includes a gorgeous princess, a tower guarded by a dragon, and of course a handsome prince. "Shrek” (2001) however, is very different from all the typical fairy-tale clichés. The directors, Vicky Jenson and Andrew Adamson display the hero, Shrek (Mike Myers), as a giant green, grumpy ogre with trumpet-shaped ears who lives alone in a swamp. The local government, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), has requested that to preserve the "perfection" of his town Duloc, all fairy-tale creatures must be rounded up and restricted to the swamp where Shrek lives.

es indeed, animation is fun for children, but it also expresses important ideas for people of all ages. In some ways, ‘Shrek’ is your classic fairy tale for example, it has a hero, a beautiful Princess, and a dastardly villain. But unlike the traditional fairy tales, the hero is an ugly, ill-tempered ogre, the Princess is not all she appears to be, and the villain has some obvious shortcomings. The award-winning animated film, ‘Shrek’, is directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, the viewers learn that being a good person is more important than just being good-looking. It also shows that true friends help each other in difficult situations and that women can be equally as strong characters as men. These ideas are portrayed through characters such as Shrek, Princess Fiona and Donkey. The directors use camera angles and dialogue to express their ideas.

A person can take a story and look at it from many ways. Fairy tales represent the transformation of young people. Beauty is transformed into a young woman; she passes through the stages successfully and in turn is able to love. Every story teaches a lesson and in this case more than one lesson is taught. Not only is the lesson of sexuality and maturity taught, an even more important lesson is taught. Beauty and the Beast shows that true love comes from within the inside and if it is meant to be it will prevail.
