The Diary of Anne Frank is a diary written by Anne Frank herself obviously. This diary made its way into plays and even a movie. But here we are focusing on the play. More specifically we are talking about Anne Frank and Peter Van Daan. The similarities and differences between those two were particularly striking and deserved thorough investigation. The first similarity between Anne and Peter is both of them are living in an attic of a warehouse and office building in Amsterdam, Holland. Both of them are living in hiding from the Nazi's. Anyway, the first difference between Anne and Peter is Anne is wild and ou there while Peter is more to himself. On many occasions Peter opted to stay in his room with his cat Mouschi rather than eat. Anne is more expressive. For example, if something/someone gets her mad/upset she will inform everyone around her of it. This is evident when her mother tries to see if she's alright by asking her to see her tongue. Anne refuses her mother's instruction to show her tongue. Mrs.Van Daan gets involved and instructs her to listen. So as you can see Anne can be quite something. Another difference between Anne and Peter is Anne has a tense relationship with her mother while Peter has a tense relationship with his father. It is evident Peter has shaky or tense relationship with his father because when Mr.Van Daan says to Dussel ''Did Mr.Kraler warn you that you won't get much to eat here?". The stage direction after that says "Peter walks away humiliated". The third and final difference is Anne's mother and father have a good relationship and Peter's mother like him doesn't get along with his father. There isn't much evidence to prove that Mr. and Mrs.Frank have a good relationship. But, their relationship is golden compared to Mr. and Mrs.Van Daan which involves yelling and lots of it. On an early morning in July of 1942, the Van Daans and Franks meet up for the first time at the annex. All of them are covered in layers of clothing to carry as much to their new home as possible. They are all introduced to each other. Living in the secret annex is Mr. and Mrs. Van Daan, Peter Van Daan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank, Margot, and Anne Frank. Mr. Van Daan is a selfish, greedy man. Mrs. Van Daan likes the finer things, thinks pretty highly of herself and adores her husband. Peter is shy, quiet, and just truly doesn’t say much. Mr. Frank is a kind, caring, leading man. Mrs. Frank is motherly, caring, and sweet. Margo does as others say and tries to keep a low-key profile. Anne is wild and unique. She doesn’t let others push her around, and she is very independent. Everyone in the annex is very different.
... the middle of the tattered city sits Mr. Frank, reading Anne’s diary. He is the only one who survived after being sent to a concentration camp. Wind was blowing in the pages he was barely holding. Determination settled in his face as a thought of publishing the diary to let everyone know the life of being drowned in silence, the life of perpetual fear. Anne Frank may be gone, but her legacy is left behind. Although everyone else died in different concentration camps they were sent to, Mr. Frank organized the hiding to the best of his ability. Mr. Frank demonstrated his great leadership qualities by thinking of others before himself, keeping a constructive and encouraging attitude, and making hard decisions. The play would not have been possible without Mr. Frank’s effort in getting Anne’s diary published. Through thick and thin, Mr. Frank sewed everything together.

Though there were differences in Anne and Peter’s love life and how Margot and Peter progressed to only be friends, I would assume it was a difficult task to convert the diary to this format. The similarities like Anne giving the presents were the more heartfelt moments to show where Anne grew and made sense to include them in both. Both were heartbreaking to know that the Franks, the Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel had to endure this terrible time. Anne, Margot, and Peter having to endure it as children. Knowing that it is not fiction and this actually happened to not just them, but others is unfathomable to me and I will never be able to grasp it unless I am ever unfortunate enough to go through it myself. To start Anne Frank and Jeanne Wakatsuki were very similar. One similarity is that they both lived during World War II. Another similarity is that they both were the youngest in their families. I'm sure that she had the Nazis in mind when writing it, along with her experiences with certain people she was living with. Her relationship with Peter over the years was an indication of her feelings in the quote. She despised Peter when first getting to know him, but as time progressed she began to appreciate him. In the beginning of the play, Anne bellowed at Peter, "You are the most intolerable, insufferable boy I've ever met!" on page 295 of The Diary of Anne Frank." Leading up to her frustration portrayed in this quote, Peter had been calling Anne "Mrs. Quack Quack" and would repeatedly quack at her to annoy her. Her feelings towards Peter showed the same meaning as the statement in her diary. "In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart." Early in the hiding period, she thought Peter was just another annoying teenage boy. He was always making rude comments and jokes, furthermore just being a pesky roommate. As time passed the two of them had grown older and became used to each other. Anne was beginning to realise that maybe Peter wasn't as bad as she had thought before. The audience is first introduced to Peter in Scene Two. Peter is negative, isolated, and "Vile." We can infer that on page 545 he uses his cat as a metaphor for himself, "He doesn't like strangers." Peter also says, "I'm kind of a lone wolf." and, "I'm a dunce. I'm a hopeless case . . ." This shows that he is lonely, sarcastic, and unlike Anne: negative and self-aware.

What part of the event would you begin with, the struggle, the death of innocent Jews, or the cruel witnessed? When survivors are questioned about their experience they shiver from head to toe, recalling what they have been through. Therefore, they use substitutes such as books and diaries to expose these catastrophic events internationally. Books such as Maus, A survivor’s tale by Art Spiegelman, and Anne Frank by Ann Kramer. Spiegelman presents Maus in a comical format; he integrated the significance of Holocaust while maintaining the comic frame structure format, whereas comic books are theoretically supposed to be entertaining. Also, Maus uses a brilliant technique of integrating real life people as animal figures in the book. Individually, both stories involve conflicts among relationships with parents. Furthermore, Maus jumps back and forth in time. Although, Anne Frank by Ann Kramer, uses a completely different technique. Comparatively, both the books have a lot in common, but each book has their own distinctive alterations.
