Witches and Wiccans are commonly mistaken for one another, due to their similar names and practices. The word “witch” comes from the Old English words “wicca” and “wicce”, referring to male and female persons who did witchcraft. What we know as Wicca now is a religion. Wiccans are people who follow the religion of Wicca. Wicca was founded in 1954 by Gerald B. Gardener, who created the religion after he was accepted into a coven of witches in England and migrated to America. The religion is based in part off of the Northern European pagan religion, referring to the worship of a Goddess of fertility and a Horned God.
Witchcraft has been around for centuries, and it was called many things before settling on the name it has currently.
