I’ve been listed into the Canadian army because I saw this war as an exciting opportunity to go overseas with my chums and fight for our nation! Unfortunately, I was unaware of the reality which lied ahead in the war. Throughout the war, we currently live in the trenches and the conditions are terrible. During the day, we wait for an enemy attack, but if it doesn’t occur, we are obligated to do boring chores. This involves cleaning our equipment, filling sandbags and repairing boards. Due to the heavy rainfall, we also drain the trenches in our free time to prevent the dirt from becoming thick disgusting mud. Even if there are no attacks which take place, death constantly occurs because of shellfire from the enemies. The night is even busier and more dangerous compared to the day! Due to the dark, many missions are made into no man’s land, we dig new trenches, we repair barbed wires and we patrol for night raids from the enemies. When we aren’t busy with chores or missions, my chums and I are usually bored. We are free to attend other matters such as reading, cooking, sleeping, or writing letters to family. Many soldiers enjoy making trench art, but I amuse myself by gambling, like a real man should. As you can see, a day is quite busy and we are required to perform in terrible conditions. The abnormal rainfall causes extremely thick mud which makes it difficult to walk and has even caused some weak men to drown. I haven’t seen this occur, but I have seen rats the size of cats, feast on the bodies of my fellow soldiers in no man’s land. No man’s land is the area between our trench and the enemy’s trench, the place where no one wishes to cross because of the fear of being killed. The dirty rats along with lice spread disease such as trench fever. This can be prevented by wearing silk underclothing underpants, but I’m too manly to wear silk, so don’t send me
