Dentistry Personal Statement

As the child of an orthodontist, my father, and a dental hygienist, my mother, pursuing a career in dentistry seemed to be a logical choice. However, as I watched my father with his patients, observing him as he diagnosed the problems presented to him, suggested possible solutions and formulated treatment plans to provide effective and efficient treatments for the patients, it sparked what was initially just a logical choice to shift into a curious passion for the field.

To me, dentistry is a vast academic field, engaging in its demand for the problem solving skills required to propose an ideal solution, the manual dexterity required to perform said solution, and the empathy and human skills required to communicate effectively with others. I feel that there is great satisfaction in maintaining and improving the oral health and confidence of people. The high standards involved are intimidating challenges, but they are ones I am determined to confront.

My father told me of 4 major aspects that every aspiring dental students needs: Good education, diligence, adequate clinical experience, and talent. I am a successful student, earning Head’s commendations at Chinese International School in recognition of academic excellence. I am faithful to my commitments and have been a long-term member of the table tennis, archery and dragon dance teams at my school. I have also been involved in volunteer work since a very young age, and it is still my mission to serve the community. I am also persistent in my desire to learn, and have sought out many opportunities for clinical experience to expand my awareness of the ever-evolving field of Dentistry.
