Meaning of Race: White Privilege In America, our society is made up of many races, yet people believe my life is easy just because I am white. It is assumed that white people receive benefits, and have the most power. However, I have learned that race is not the only factor that determines one’s status or position in life. In addition, the concept of white privilege is not as prominent in younger generations. Despite the assumptions made about white citizens and people who take advantage of white privilege; there are some circumstances where being white has a negative impact. During the college process, I had interviews with college admission officers and many of them warned me about my demographics: “We are looking for underprivileged students now, because we want to help students who were not as fortunate when they were younger”. The fact that demographics can stop me from an acceptance at a university is upsetting. I am being penalized for something I cannot control; I did not chose my parents, their income or my high school. I feel my academics and achievements may be overlooked to fill a quota. In this scenario I believe my racial group had a negative impact. I wish applications for college and jobs were read “blind”, so race and wealth were not a factor in a final decision. Unfortunately my single personal experience will not lessen the notion of white privilege. The American society views white people at the top of the social/economic hierarchy; however, that high-ranking includes the stereotype that white people are racist, ignorant and greedy. Our society will never be perfect, but I believe white privilege is not as evident as people
