The google definition of silence is the complete absence of sound. I think that the meaning of silence is much more than we realise. Although silence is a small and not obvious action it can tell a lot about one’s feelings and personality. Some people don’t know silence well enough and some know silence too much. Personally I think I can relate to silence because of my personality. I have learned a lot up to these years and it has made me stronger as a person. Things that are left unsaid are normally the most truthful things. On the other hand some things are left unsaid because you are helping the other person involved by keeping it to yourself. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is nothing at all.Through these past high school years one thing that will always stay the same is humors that people seem to spread all the time. This may give them pleasure as it is something interesting but is never a mature response. I have caught on, that silence is the best answer as silence can never be misquoted. Another thing I have grasped onto is that there is something worse than anger. You can always tell when someone is upset because they verbally express it, but silence is one way you can really know you did something wrong. In Orfield Laboratories, Minnesota there exists a room known as an anechoic chamber. Anechoic means free from echoes, the room measures at -9 decibels. 45 minutes marks the longest time anyone has spent in there alone. Lacking outside noises, the quietude of the room allows those inside to hear their own internal organs; occasionally hallucinations occur. The chamber amplifies an unknown fear, dead silence and extreme loneliness. Like many things, silence has a multitude of advantages, but extreme silence can prove devastation. In Chaim Potok’s The Chosen silence as a theme demonstrates destructivity. Devastation caused by silence is shown through Reb’s parenting methods, Danny’s silence between his father, and Reuven’s various experiences with silence.

In The Chosen, silence plays an important aspect in the characters lives. Reb Saunders forced silence and suffering upon his son Danny by not talking to him about anything other than his studies. He says he does this because he feels that Danny is so brilliant that he might not understand the suffering of others. Reb Saunders feels that silence is suffering by imposing non-communication, however, silence is really how Reuven, Danny, David Malter, and Reb Saunders communicate with each other and the world around them.

In The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the main character Reuven Malter experiences silence in all forms. This phrase applies to him by the time that he never appreciated how much he and Danny Saunders has been talking and then suddenly Reb Saunders, Danny's father, separated them. This is appointed to in this passage, "I hated the silence between us and thought it unimaginable that Danny and his father never really talked. Silence was ugly, it was black, it leered, it was cancerous, it was death. I hated it, and I hated Reb Saunders for forcing it upon me and his son (Potok 235, Ch 14). After the birth of my first child, I had to learn to develop constructive ways to vent anger. One of those ways was to go off alone, count to ten, and think about what it was that made me angry. After I discovered the root of my anger, I often asked myself, "Will it do me or anyone else any good to be angry?", and, "Will being angry do anything to solve the problem", and the answer to both questions was usually no. By the time I had done the walking and thinking, I was usually not angry anymore.
This can either be a positive or negative thing and how you act on it, or do not act, can show how in control and effective you are with your feelings. According to the text, “just because you feel a certain way does not mean you have to act on it” and that “people who act out angry feelings actually feel worse than those who experience anger without lashing out” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor II, year?). Even though acting on your feelings may seem uncontrollable, it is important to deal with them in a different and more productive way. Recognizing how you feel and using the right approach during a constructive conversation is always better than quickly lashing out without completely understanding the situation or how you feel besides angry. Furthermore, “recognizing the difference between feeling and acting can liberate you from the fear that getting in touch with certain emotions will commit you to a course of action” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor II, year?). Understanding your emotions is important so that you will be able to experience feelings that may upset you and still be able to deal with them from a positive standpoint.
