Fear is the feeling of uneasiness. It makes people look behind their backs, feel nervous, and afraid. Fear starts when someone sees or hears something scary or frightening. They can start to feel jittery and uneasy. What happens after can differ. People can feel the need to run, to hide, or to fight. Their hands can get cold or clammy. Their hearts start to beat faster and they can start to breath harder. There are different things that can make people feel scared. People can feel afraid because of movies, books, or even rides. I remember feeling afraid the first time I went on a roller coaster that went upside down. The roller coaster was not that big but I was 14 and nervous. As I waited in line and got closer to the front I thought of turning back, but I decided that I would try it. As I sat down I remember my heart beat speeding up and feeling the need to get off. When the ride was over I realized it was not something to be afraid of but, I still get nervous when I wait in line for it. That is only one of the rides that make me scared. There are lot of different phobias that make people feel afraid. The online etymology dictionary defines a phobia as an “excessive or irrational fear of something.” A phobia can be about anything. Some people have phobias about spiders, water, heights, and the dark. If people were to trace the root of the word they would realize that it can mean fear, panic, terror, and even flight.
