In Deborah Nucatola’s piece “Morning-after pill a boon for women,” the author gives an opinion on a federal judge’s decision to lift restrictions on emergency birth control. Nucatola uses a claim of value to argue that the judge’s ruling would give women the ability to better manage their reproductive needs with an alternative to abortion in cases of emergency. Nucatola’s warrants are that many people believe abortion and underage sexual activity are bad. That emergency birth control is equivalent to abortion or could lead to an increase in teen sexual activity. The author does this by using her expert opinion to separate the differences between emergency contraception, which simply stops conception from occurring, and Mifepristone, a drug used to chemically induce an abortion. She then goes on to make an appeal to a parents social needs concerning the health and well-being of their children. Nocatola uses her expert opinion to assure parents that there is no evidence to suggest emergency contraception is unsafe or that it increases the likelihood of sexual activity among teenagers. She reminds parents that doctors have been prescribing emergency contraception since the 1960s without medial issue which in turn addresses the second warrant. She ends with another appeal to the religious values of the opponents of abortion by using her expert opinion to assure them the best way to prevent abortion is to continue to allow emergency contraception to be obtained by young people
