The role of a parent is to care for their children – to teach them to respect and love; to share and to be kind. So many people take for granted the lives they have, specifically the support they receive from loved ones at home. As teenagers we joke about how much we ‘hate’ our parents and all of the things we wish we could have in the world. But what if parents are failing to nurture their children; failing to provide them with the necessities of life? This is when the Department of Children and Families is to step in to be sure children have a safe home environment. And what if DCF fails to protect the children? At least nine mandatory reporter filed reports indicating a lack of appropriate care of Mr. Lints (The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2015). Nine times the state had the opportunity to step in and investigate. During all of this the family was receiving services from many angles. As many as 16 DCF staff, eight Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative Professionals, a neuropsychologist, numerous medical providers, teachers and a guidance counselor were involved in Jack’s care (The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2015). Many of the mandatory reporter reports were discarded because those who observed Jack in home felt that Lints was providing care for his son (The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2015). But even with the reports that were screened out, DCF reported that there were many instances in which Lints’ reports differed greatly than those of reporters and other individuals (The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 2015). Despite the numerous treatments and services the family was receiving, in the end it made little difference as Jack is now in a coma. There was a clear oversight in the management of Jack’s case. His care was not equitable (Fainstein, 2010). The family did not receive specialized care. They received the typical standard care for a family involved in the system. The fact that Jack was taken away from his primary guardian and forced to live with a person whom he did not know was not taken into consideration in his care. The fact that Lints said he did not know if he was a fit parent was not evaluated.
