In the past couple decades our society has taken enormous leaps in providing equality for women. The major turning point for gender equality was August of 1920 when the 19th amendment was passed, giving women in America the right to vote. During the 1800’s ideas of equality amongst citizens became more prominent and would eventually lead to the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Nevertheless before this time in many cases women were viewed as objects belonging to men. They had no legal right to property, they could not vote, many women at this time received little to no academic education, and women were also expected to stay at home raise kids and do other things such as clean and cook. After the Civil War more and more women started to join the workforce.
Women have had it rough throughout history. Their declining position in the world started during the Neolithic revolution, into Rome, and past the Renaissance. However, at the turn of the twentieth century, women began advocating for equality no matter their governmental situation. This promotion of women's rights is evident in communist nations during the twentieth century and their fight against hundreds of years of discrimination. It can be seen that women were brainwashed into believing that their rights were equal with the male population through the use of propaganda, yet this need for liberation continued despite government inadequacy at providing these simple rights. America is the land of opportunity. It is a place of rebirth, hope, and freedom. However, it was not always like that for women. Many times in history women were oppressed, belittled, and deprived of the opportunity to learn and work in their desired profession. Instead, their life was confined to the home and family. While this was a noble role, many females felt that they were being restricted and therefore desired more independence. In America, women started to break the mold in 1848 and continued to push for social, political, educational, and career freedom. By the 1920s, women had experienced significant “liberation”, as they were then allowed to vote, hold public office, gain a higher education, obtain new jobs, drastically change their appearance, and participate in entertainment and sports. However, there are some that say that females were still suppressed by the advertising industry and stereotypes. But even with those setbacks, women achieved a new way of life that affected the entire nation.
Women, like black slaves, were treated unequally from the male before the nineteenth century. The role of the women played the part of their description, physically and emotionally weak, which during this time period all women did was took care of their household and husband, and followed their orders. Women were classified as the “weaker sex” or below the standards of men in the early part of the century. Soon after the decades unfolded, women gradually surfaced to breathe the air of freedom and self determination, when they were given specific freedoms such as the opportunity for an education, their voting rights, ownership of property, and being employed.
Many ancient laws and beliefs show that women from all around the world have always been considered inferior to men. However, as time went on, ideas of equality circulated around and women started to demand equality. Many women fought for equality and succeeded in bringing some rights. However, full equality for women has yet to be fulfilled. This issue is important because many women believe that the rights of a person should not be infringed no matter what their gender is, and by not giving them equality, their rights are being limited. During the periods 1840 to 1968, total equality for women did not become a reality due to inadequate political representation, economic discrepancy, and commercial objectification.

Women were seldom acknowledged if they chose to participate in scientific research during the 17th and 18th centuries. Men dominated scientific study and it was considered to be a social stigma for women to even think about delving into male-dominated intellectual fields. Society reinforced that women were incapable of doing anything besides fulfilling traditional female roles. Reactions and attitudes to women working in the sciences were wide-ranging, but most were negative. Men oppressed women due to the fact they thought they were superior, as well as women who criticized others for participating in scientific institutions. Although there have been many improvements in the changes of women’s equality towards the lives of women’s freedom and rights in society, some liberals believe that women have a journey to go before they receive total equality. The thought of women having equal rights has caused major controversy throughout American History. Women have fought for their rights for many years, wanting to be more than a wife or a maid. Women’s Rights Movement was an effort by many women around the U.S standing up for themselves. Before the 1920s men and women were thought to have two separate roles in life. People believed women should be concerned with their children, home, and religion, while men took care of business and politics. In 1920 there were significant changes for women in politics, the home, and the workplace. Women’s Rights is known as a movement that is rich is history yet still impacts the present day. The movement began in the 19th century with women seeking to be treated as equal to men. The Women’s Rights Movement focused on social and institutional barriers that limited women’s rights – family responsibilities, limited educational and economic opportunities, and no voice in political debates. While it is written in history that the movement lasted from 1848 to 1920, much of the Women’s Rights Movement is still applicable today. While women’s rights now include the right to vote, women are still fighting for reproductive rights, the right to work for equal pay, and a greater voice in politics.
From the beginning of time, females have played a powerful role in the shaping of this world. They have stood by idly and watched as this country moved on without them, and yet they have demanded equal rights as the nation rolls along. In the past, many people believed that women’s exclusive responsibilities were to serve their husband, to be great mothers and to be the perfect wives. Those people considered women to be more appropriate for homemaking rather than to be involved in business or politics.
