The term “history repeats itself” is a well known saying due to the truth that it carries. We see that throughout time, certain events tend to recur, with respect to the culture of the era. A topic that not only pertains to this quote, but also challenges it, would be art. Throughout the history of Art many artists have borrowed the ideas of past counterparts. Which led to them recreating the famous pieces of works, while adding their own signature twist or changing it completely. Two well known artists from different periods of time have taken on creating a sculpture of David and Goliath. The nakedness brings about an erotic feeling to the piece along with the feather from Goliath’s helmet going up the back of his right leg, his young appearance however suggests otherwise. He wears only boots and and a hat which seem purposely done so his youthful body can be shown along with his victorious stance. The piece almost seems unimaginable due to Donatello using a much younger version of David, making us question if this was done to suggest divine intervention of the defeat. Art work repeating itself throughout history, simultaneously interconnecting with its present times and upholding beliefs, ideas and resources. Each artist incorporates his own personal touch to his work that symbolises an important detail in his time period. Both artists were greatly influenced by their eras, Donatello being influenced by the Renaissance era and Bernini by the Baroque era. Donatello captures the free standing nude statue possibly signifying the “rebirth” of this era, while capturing David’s natural human position. Bernini on the other hand captures a very realistic like David with a detailed visual story that exhorts tension, the exaggerated and easily interpreted style compares to his era. The differences are not only within the storyline of each piece, but also in the material used to sculpt them. Donatello used bronze which gave it a polished dark hue, while Bernini used marble creating a more realistic look with a saturated rustic staining. In conclusion both artists created a piece of artwork that is generally based around a similar biblical figure, however added their own touch to their pieces that distinguishes drastically from one
