1a. Just like how written text or spoken words are forms of self-expression, music provides the outlet for people to convey express themselves. In a religious setting, music is able to serve a much more powerful purpose by allowing groups to unify and express the same sentiment towards their beliefs. This can appear in the form of rituals, worship, or other practices that are involved. Essentially, “Music provides a vehicle for the expression of religious emotions of awe, joy, and wonder” (Lesson 10). In the textbook, there are four elements within religious music that enlightens the human experience. These include expression, aesthetic, entertainment, and communication (Lesson 10). The song, “Here in My Life” (Lesson 10) lead by Darlene Zschech represents Christian modern hymnody as an “evangelical praise and worship song” (Lesson 10). Musically, the song is performed by a contemporary styled band that uses all the modern instruments of a typical band. There are singers, background singers, guitars, keyboards, drums, and even staging lights to make the song not only musical, but a performance show that everyone can follow along to. The audience in the video is rather young as these modern praise songs are rather new and attractive to the younger generation. What’s unique in Christian praise, is the musical intent behind the songs and the performances. Usually bands perform to give a show to their listeners and just have an enjoyable time. Although “Here in My Life” (Lesson 10) surely fulfills that, there is an added purpose of bringing everyone together to worship their God. In the video, Darlene Zschech looks up as she sings, making it feel like she is singing towards the heavens to her creator. Likewise, the audience does the same, often looking up rather than just looking at the band performers. The video of the Tibetan women chanting the “Tara Sutra” (Lesson 10), is an example of a sacred chant tradition for Buddhists. The video shows a group of old women spinning “the mani kang (prayer wheel) located in the center of the village” (Lesson 10). Every time they spin a revolution, the bell rings. Throughout the entire endeavor, the women are chanting or just socializing. This exemplifies how religious music can bring people together and help form communities through the entertainment and communication values mentioned in 1a. These old ladies are probably unable to work long days or take care of others, but through this religious chant, they are able to feel a sense of belonging. What’s cool about this is that anyone can participate in chanting the Tara Sutra regardless of musical talent and ability. It is not restricted to high religious positions nor the musically gifted, which allows the old women in the video to all feel involved in the
