In Dante Alighieri’s, The Divine Comedy, it shows Dante’s journey back to the right path, the path to God. Dante is led by Virgil through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Dante changes throughout the story, beginning with sympathizing for the sinners, and eventually he begins to understand that they deserve to be where they are. He sees the suffering in Hell, the trials and punishments in Purgatory, and finally he sees the bliss of Heaven. Dante travels through all nine circles of Hell and all the levels of Purgatory, finally he travels through Heaven and meets God. In the beginning Dante sympathized and felt pity for the suffering sinners. He “wept so piteously” for the sinners. Half way through Hell he begins to understand that the people belong there. He slowly accepts that the sinners in Hell belong there. Some sinners make Dante go back and sympathize for them while others make him cruel and wrathful. …show more content…

Dante sees the levels of Purgatory and the punishments that come with those sections. The prideful section of Purgatory got Dante’s attention the most. “My soul is gripped by a far greater fear of the torment below, for even now I seem to feel the burden those souls bear” shows that Dante accepts that pride might be his most defining fear. He fears that he’ll end up crushed by boulders like the prideful in Purgatory. That begins to change Dante even more. Dante begins to realize his past sins and realizes he’s needs to atone for those
