This musical is about two rival singing gangs named the Jets and the other the Sharks. The Jets are made up of white male teenagers which the Sharks are colored Puerto Rican teenagers. They don’t like each other and hate one another. The leader of the Jets wants an ex-Jet Tony to join in a fight. They believe the Jets are superior and want to keep other gangs out. Tony gets pressured to go by the Leader and he accepts. Tony begins to have a musical number at his job and sings about how great tonight will be. At a dance, Tony spots a Puerto Rican woman named Maria. They both dance and appear to fall in love. However, both individuals come from two rival backgrounds and interrelations is prohibited. Anita, who is Maria’s sister in law tries to defend Maria. Maria’s brother wants to fight Tony because he kissed Maria. Tony in song declares that the name Maria will always be something special to him. Tony goes to Maria's balcony and sings to her. They profess their love to one another. Maria at her jobs begins to sing about how pretty she feels because she is loved by a handsome man. Tony and Maria want to get married and place mannequins to play out their wedding in a fabric store. They are both scared of what their parents would think and Maria's agrees to meet Tony’s mother. There are songs, establishing mood throughout the video. The song Maria becomes slow, then loud with passion. The mood begins to become in love and sweet passion. America is another song which is upbeat and the lyrics are comedic. It helps establish a light friendly mood.In the song. One Hand, One Heart, the music becomes slow and serious. The music focuses on Maria’s and Tony’s desire to marry one another. More songs help understand the character's personality. The Jet Song is quirky and the lyrics are barbaric. The characters are also seen as oddballs that don’t follow any rules.
I Feel Pretty was a song by Maria which she sings happily. The music is upbeat and professes her new found love.
